Head of Technical Services, Jones Library, Inc. (Amherst)

The Jones Library, Inc. in Amherst, MA seeks an enthusiastic and technologically savvy Head of Technical Services. The position is open due to a retirement after several decades at the library. The Head of Technical Services manages the Technical Services team and participates on the Library’s Reference team. Jones Library and Branches strive to foster an inclusive environment and place high value on composing a staff that is as diverse as the population we serve. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic, patron-focused librarian who displays a genuine interest in technology; who enjoys detail-oriented tasks and has an eye for detail; who has great communication skills; and is excited about creating efficiencies within the Technical Services department.

Essential Responsibilities:

·         Plans and coordinates the long-term and daily operations of a centralized Technical Services Department, for The Jones Library and its branches. Leads the department in modernizing and streamlining workflows using current technology. Analyzes departmental services and activities, implementing changes as needed. Initiates new projects, in collaboration with colleagues. 

·         Recommends, hires, and evaluates staff, student assistants and volunteers. Maintains open lines of communication with and among staff members. Thoroughly trains all staff who catalog and maintain the database. 

·         Catalogs and classifies all library materials. Provides cataloging expertise, communicating effectively with Technical Services and other Library staff about cataloging policies, procedures and practices. Solves cataloging problems, and provides original cataloging. Works closely with the Adult Services team to represent digital collections and resources in the public catalog.

·         Provides expertise in database maintenance and retrieval of data.

·         Plans and supervises acquisitions for the main Library and branches.

·         Coordinates and supervises physical processing of all Library materials; purchases supplies needed for this task.

·         Participates on the Reference Team. Provides research assistance, technology support and instruction, and readers’ advisory services.

·         Supervises check-in and cataloging of periodicals.

·         Participates in the Library Policies and Development Team as a member of staff committees. Communicates official plans, policies and procedures to staff and to the general public.


·         Master's Degree in Library Science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association, and a minimum of three years experience in library operations.

·         Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs. 

·         Thorough knowledge of classification and cataloging systems and practices as well as selection tools and techniques.

·         Knowledge of equipment and facilities used by a Technical Services Department.

·         Demonstrated ability with current technology, library computer applications, and equipment; ability to adapt to emerging technologies and acquire necessary skills. 

·         Enthusiasm, creativity, and strong public service orientation.

·         Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of others. 

·         Excellent managerial and planning skills.

·         Ability to generate and analyze a variety of reports and records. 

·         Working knowledge of the principles and practices of management and budgeting.

·         Excellent communication skills, oral and written, with persons of diverse ethnic backgrounds.

·         Ability to work well as a part of a team and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers, the general public, and partner agencies.

·         Bilingual capabilities preferred.
