Children's Librarian, Westwood Public Library (Westwood)

The Westwood Public Library seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and energetic professional librarian committed to providing high-quality library services for children and their families.  The Children’s Department provides diverse and vibrant programming, strong readers’ advisory support, and a robust materials collection in an inviting and elegant space.  The Children’s Department has a collection of 26,000 items, with an annual budget of approximately $46,000. Circulation of children’s materials is currently over 100,000, and staff present over 350 programs a year, often in collaboration with community organizations, schools, childcare agencies, town departments, and local businesses.

The Children's Librarian assists with a broad range of children’s library services, including readers’ advisory, reference, programming, materials selection, and outreach to schools and day care programs. The position reports to the Head of Youth Services and works with a staff of 2.5 FTEs.  

Requirements Include:  Extensive and current knowledge of children’s literature. Proficiency in current news, trends, technology, literature, media, and timely events that impact library users’ needs.  Demonstrated ability to create and facilitate programs, both inside and outside the library, which meet the developmental and enrichment needs of babies, children through Grade 6 and their parents and caregivers, and meet the needs of the Library’s mission and evolving curriculum focus.  Ability to design effective print and non-print materials (including social media initiatives) to publicize literacy, Library resources, services and programs.   Assists the Head of Youth Services with print and non-print collection development.  Seeks and applies for additional funding opportunities to expand and enhance Library services and patron experience.

The position is full-time (35 hours per week) and includes one evening per week and a Saturday rotation.    


Master’s Degree in Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited program and two years of responsible library experience.
