Library Assistant to Childrens Librarian / Childrens Programmer, Falmouth Public Library (Falmouth)

The Falmouth Public Library is looking for a full-time, 37.5 hour a week Library Assistant to the Children's Librarian for 5 days per week, including one evening (Tuesdays 12:30-8:30) and rotating Fridays and Saturdays. The position includes programming for children from ages 0-12 as assigned and in cooperation with the Children's Librarian. Programs may be held at the library, outside, or in the community, as well as in person or virtual. Also oversees the work of the department in the absence of the Children's Librarian.

Provides direct library services primarily to children birth to 12 and their caregivers as well as professionals who work with children. The Falmouth Public Library has the largest and busy Children’s Room on Cape Cod, with a large and diverse book collection and dedicated programming budget. Candidates should be flexible and energetic with a positive attitude and welcoming demeanor as well as experienced with social media and devices of all kinds. Familiarity with child development, the principles of early literacy and children's literature is desired.  Previous experience in providing programs to school-aged children and in a CLAMS public library strongly desired. Will also be required to work occasional (generally 1x per month) Sundays 1-5 pm from November-April. Availability of local housing is challenging year-round.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE -Two (2) years of college and two (2) years of experience in library or related children’s service work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience;  Previous experience in providing programs to preschool & school-aged children strongly desired.

KNOWLEDGE -Knowledge of principles and practices of library work including familiarity with an online system, the Dewey Decimal System and a Windows Operating System; knowledge of children’s literature, and library reference methods; computer and keyboard proficiency.


ABILITIES - Ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy; ability to relate well to people; ability to be flexible; ability to apply judgment and tact; ability to prioritize tasks; ability to engage children in library activities.


SKILLS - Strong communication skills, excellent customer service skills; skilled in the operation of various office equipment and various computer software programs; strong reading skills and appreciation for library services.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - Moderate physical effort required in performing duties under typical working conditions; must lift library material weighing up to thirty (30) pounds and push/pull library carts weighing up to sixty (60) pounds; sit, stand, bend, reach, stoop, kneel and read visually
