Youth Services Assistant, Amesbury Public Library (Amesbury)

HOURS OF WORK: 35 hours a week, one night and Fridays/Saturdays on rotation

POSITION PURPOSE: The Youth Services Assistant provides friendly and efficient service to patrons of all ages (children and teen and their caregivers) in the Youth Service’s Department and collaborates with the Youth Services team. They are responsible for connecting children and teen library patrons with information and developing and implementing engaging library programs and services.

-Assist with the planning and implementing of all programming including planning and prepping activities to coordinate with program themes as overseen by the Head of Youth Services.
-Meet the public with a positive and pleasant manner.
-Perform regular storytimes once suitably trained.
-Responsible for overseeing ongoing programs and passive programming, such as 1000 Books Before Kindergarten and an annual poetry contest.
-Monitor craft supplies and notifying the Head of Youth Services of needed purchases.
-Design bulletin boards and other displays and assist in the general upkeep of the Youth Services room.
-Perform basic readers’ advisory assistance in the recommendation and retrieval of materials.
-Answer basic reference questions.
-Shelve materials in the children’s room, and other collections as necessary, on a regular basis.
-Assist in the supervision of Library Pages and volunteers.
-Assist patrons with questions about the online catalog and reserving books.
-Oversee kit creation and monitor them for maintenance.
-Assist with collection maintenance including withdrawing books, mending items, and upkeep of series sections.
-As directed by Head of Youth Services, assist with publicity and creation of library flyers.
-Be flexible in work place with ability to work at home if necessary.
-Work as part of the circulation department when shifts are needed.
-Other duties as assigned

-Excellent computer skills, particularly in O365 environment and Windows operating systems, and software/apps used for marketing (Canva, social media, website design, etc.)
-Familiarity with integrated library systems, preferably Symphony

CONFIDENTIALITY: The employee has regular access to a wide variety of confidential information, including library patron records and borrowing history in accordance with the State Public Records Law.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to handle varying levels of noise and activities. Standing, walking, bending, crouching, seeing, hearing, talking, carrying, climbing, and the ability to lift 50 required.


High School diploma with some college recommended. Experience working with children. Library and/or art experience preferred.
