Temporary Access Services Coordinator (90 day role), Harvard University / Harvard Library (Cambridge)

Access Services actively supports mission of the Harvard Library by delivering a high standard of service; cultivating a welcoming environment that is supportive to academic research and inquiry; stewarding the university collection; and connecting the academic community to the vast array of library resources. We support the teaching and scholarly mission of the University through collaborative partnerships with the community of students, scholars, and professionals at Harvard and beyond. 

Reporting to the Access Services Manager for Circulation and Reading Room Services, the Temporary Access Services Specialist is a highly visible position responsible for actively assisting users and monitoring multiple library functions in a dynamic environment to deliver excellent service to library patrons.

The Temporary Access Services Specialist is based at the Widener Library Circulation Desk with some work performed in the Widener Reading Room. This is a 90-day position. Assigned hours are Monday 9am-5pm, and Tuesday through Friday 11AM -7PM. This schedule represents our expected needs at this time but are subject to change based on public health conditions and the business needs of Harvard Library.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Circulation: Open and close the library and/or Access Services work areas; loan and return materials using Alma; communicate and apply library policies; locate and retrieve requested items and assist patrons in finding library materials; assist patrons with the use of the library catalog; process incoming deliveries from other libraries and routes materials for return; enter departmental statistics

Information Services: Provides basic information and reference services at the library's service desks; assist patrons in the use of the HOLLIS catalog as well as other library materials, resources, and equipment; refer questions to specialized reference staff following established protocols; maintain statistics.

Support Reading Room Services: Provide patron support for the Widener Reading Room; assist visiting researchers; process requests; prepare rare, fragile, and non-circulating materials for in-library use in the Phillips Reading Room; convey handling instructions to patrons using rare or fragile materials and supervise their use

Student Workers: assist with overseeing the performance of daily tasks

Library Equipment: Circulate equipment; assist with scanners, copiers, and printers; restock supplies in public copiers and printers

Basic Qualifications

•   High school diploma or equivalent education required
•   Excellent oral and written communication skills
•   Strong public service orientation, with previous library or related customer service experience required
•   Computer skills must include Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel, as well as collaborative tools (e.g. Google Suite, Microsoft Teams, etc.)

Additional Requirements: 

·         College degree or college-level coursework preferred 

·         Previous library or related work experience preferred

·         Experience with an online library catalog and management system (particularly ALMA Integrated Library system) and familiarity with electronic academic library resources preferred 

·         Sensitivity to working in a diverse user environment 

·         Ability to solve problems effectively and exercise discerning judgment 

·         Some supervisory experience preferred

·         Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work productively in a team environment 

·         Ability to perform repetitive work tasks with overall accuracy, effectiveness, and attention to detail 

·         Adaptable, able to flexibly adjust to changing workplace needs

·         This position involves regularly lifting and moving loads weighing up to 50 pounds; must be able to push heavy library book trucks 

·         This position requires bending, squatting, stretching, and climbing small step stools when needed to retrieve books and shelve them
