Research & Instruction Librarian for Science and Social Science, Hampshire College (Amherst)

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The research and instruction librarian for science & social science is an integral member of a small team of engaged and innovative librarians and library colleagues. The science & social science librarian provides reference, information literacy instruction, collection development and faculty liaison services in the sciences and social sciences to the Hampshire community.  As lead librarian for InfoBar coverage, provides walk-in research consultation support and coordinates schedule for research help.  Takes the lead on organizing all library orientations for new students, transfer students, international students, and James Baldwin scholars.  Develops an innovative collection to support students in these disciplines. Takes lead on e-science resources and trends that support data gathering and management, visualization, competitive analysis, and other emerging technologies, especially as they support undergraduate research and teaching, as well as open access initiatives.  Represents the library or the College on Hampshire and Five College committees and meetings. Candidate must successfully work across generations and bring kindness, respect, and empathy into the workplace. A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds and empowering students of all abilities is essential.

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Technical or business skills include: Ability to help students and faculty access the resources they need; ability to troubleshoot technical problems; compare and contrast new pieces of technology/software/apps; use social media to promote the library and its resources; learn new methods of communicating and interacting with faculty or students; proficiency in 21st Century learning environments, including e-science experience and knowledge, an understanding of the data curation process, knowledge of metadata standards, and experience building new collections and developing related metadata, workflow, and access processes; ability to locate and vet new resources.

Must be passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism. 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities. 

Supports and enhances a sense of belonging and success of students from traditionally marginalized populations.



REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program

Three years of job-related experience

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
