Library Staff - Youth Services Librarian, Marlborough Public Library (Marlborough)

Under the direction of the Children’s Librarian and the Young Adult Librarian acts as an individual contributor on the team serving youth from birth to grade 12. Support programs and activities of both departments.  

Duties and Responsibilities:
· Promotes and provides exemplary customer service to patrons and staff.
· Proactively promotes the activities, services, and programs of the library, particularly in Children’s and Teen Services.
· Provides Reader’s Advisory to children, teens, parents, teachers, and general public.
· Plans and implements a variety of creative library programs designed to encourage participation of library patrons, including but not limited to, teen programs, story time, craft programs and author visits.
· Creates booklists and pathfinders. 
· Assists in creating attractive display designs to promote books, authors and other material in both departments.
· Protects confidentiality of patron records according to library policy and Mass General Law.
· Explains library policies and procedures.
· Participates in collection development for both departments and expenditure of budget for collections and programs. 
· Maintains collection through shelf reading and weeding. 
· Produces marketing materials to highlight programs and services. 
· May participate in social media postings according to library policy. 
· Covers departments as needed or assigned. 
· May represent library at local and network meetings. Works in collaboration with supervisors to reach out to schools and other community organizations to promote library services.
· Stays current on children’s and teen’s library trends and services through professional development, professional journals and networking.
· May act as the supervisor in charge on nights and weekends. 
· Provides direct customer service at the Children and Teen service desks and performs wide range of duties including but not limited to: answers inquiries on the telephone and in person and provides reader’s advisory and reference assistance. 
· Assists patrons with technology questions and training, including the use of the online public catalog, requesting items from other libraries and placing holds. Provides other computer assistance as required or requested. 
· Assists with statistical reporting for ARIS state report and additional statistics as requested or assigned.
· Other similar tasks and projects as requested by supervisors.
· Monitors safety of the library facility for employees and the public. Responds appropriately to emergencies and keeps supervisor informed of any problematic situations

Qualifications

Master’s in library science or a related master’s degree from an accredited program. MLS candidate considered. Experience working with children, teens and/or customer service desirable. This position has regularly assigned evening and weekend shifts. Knowledge of children’s and teen literature and library services and library technologies. Able to problem solve, flexibility, initiative and diplomacy. Able to communicate effectively with the public in person, on the telephone and in writing. Facility with computer software and hardware, including the creation of promotional materials.

Familiarity with Spanish, Portuguese desirable.
