Learning Commons Supervisor, BiblioTemps (UMASS Amherst) (Amherst)

Location:          W.E.B. Du Bois Library, UMass Amherst

Start date:         September 20, 2021

End date:           December 25, 2021

Schedule:           Sunday-Tuesday 4pm-12am; Friday 9am-5pm; Saturday 9:30am-5:30pm

Pay Rate:            $17.50

This full-time position (37.5 hours per week) will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing service activities, including library, information, and technical support, at the Learning Commons Desk in the UMass Amherst Learning Commons (LC) in the W. E. B. Du Bois Library.

Working hours:

• Sundays 4pm-12am

• Mondays 4pm-12am

• Tuesdays 4pm-12am

• Fridays 9am-5pm

• Saturdays 9:30am-5:30pm

Supervision received:

• This position reports to the Coordinator, Learning Commons.

Supervision exercised:

• Supervise student staff assisting patrons using the Learning Commons.


Provide information regarding services provided at the Libraries, in the Learning Commons, and on campus to users of the UMass Amherst Learning Commons from service desks and while roving. Use a high degree of independent judgment in responding thoroughly and accurately to questions arriving in person, by phone, and online.

Provide tiered paraprofessional reference service in an integrated public services environment online and in-person.

Provide basic hardware and software technology support. Assist users in the effective use of scanners, readers, printers, copiers, UCard Transfer stations, and other hardware devices.

Train, supervise and assist student employees to give quality service to patrons.

Assist in troubleshooting equipment in the Learning Commons.

Collaborate with all student and regular staff of the Learning Commons desk which includes non-library staff.

Assist in collecting usage statistics for monthly reports as needed.



•         Proficiency with research and reference inquiries online and in-person with the ability to provide referrals to specialists.

•         Considerable customer service experience is required along with a high ability to interact with technology and equipment.

•         Ability to interact with the public graciously and tactfully.

•         Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.

•         Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

•         Working knowledge of methods, materials, technologies and equipment used in libraries and computer labs

•         Strong customer service focus.

•         Ability to explain technologies software applications to others.

•         Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

•         Ability to schedule and train student staff.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

•         Customer service experience.

•         Supervisory experience.

•         Experience using email, word processing, spreadsheet, and web-based software applications.

•         Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

•         Demonstrated experience with the use of computers and software; ability to adapt to PCs and Macs as well as mobile devices.
