Substitute Library Clerk, Princeton Public Library (Princeton)

The library clerk is responsible for providing general library services to the public in a courteous manner and in accordance with library policies and procedures; and all other duties as required. The library clerk works under direct supervision of the library director to carry out the library’s goals and objectives. Duties include clerical work of a technical and routine nature requiring knowledge of library policies, good judgment and common sense; some performance of specialized collection maintenance tasks; and the ability to effectively work with the general public.

The library clerk provides library services to patrons by:

·       circulating materials using the online computerized catalogue/circulation system

·       providing information and reference data to patrons and youth in particular on a wide variety of topics

·       providing training to patrons in use of the computers, online catalog, internet, and copy machine

·       entering or modifying data in the online catalogue/circulation system

·       handling petty cash transactions

·       re-shelving books

·       answering telephone inquiries


Associate’s degree preferred. Experience working in a library or other public service environment highly encouraged. An avid reader is always an added bonus.

There are no set hours. Clerks will be asked to fill daytime, evening, and Saturday shifts when regular staff members are not available. The ideal candidate will live close enough to the library so as to replace last-minute call outs.
