Head of Youth Services, Tyngsborough Public Library (Tyngsborough)

Full-time/35 hours per week position; schedule includes Saturdays and one evening per week.

Reports to Library Director.

Performs professional administrative, supervisory and direct service work coordinating and managing the children's collection, programs, and activities. Coordinates young adult programming and assists with young adult collection development. This position requires a high degree of flexibility and creativity as the Library adapts to pandemic-related adjustments to how services are provided.

Duties and Responsibilites

Develops and maintains the children's collection. Assists with young adult collection; Develops and coordinates programming for children and young adults. Coordinates services and programs with schools and outside agencies; Responsible for the daily operation of the children's department. Performs circulation functions and coordinates physical maintenance. Ensures proper supervision of patrons; Promotes library services and programs through newsletters, social media, school visits, community outreach, etc.; Provides reference and reader's advisory services for patrons and staff; Provides training and assistance to patrons and staff in the use of Library resources; Maintains departmental budget for materials and programming; Serves as liaison to the Friends of the Library. Coordinates with the Friends on semiannual book sales.


Desired Minimum Qualifications

MLS degree from an accredited institution and 2-3 years related experience in children's services or an equivalent combination of experience and education. 
Working knowledge of modern library practices and procedures, including the use of computers and other technologies.
Thorough knowledge of children’s literature; basic knowledge of child development. 
Knowledge of current trends in library service to children.
Ability to develop, implement and promote programs. 
Proficient in the use of a personal computer; spreadsheet, word processing and other relevant software; the Internet, telephone, calculator and standard office equipment.
Ability to handle problem patrons and emergencies effectively.
Supervisory skills.

$22.00 - $26.19  / hour
