Library Director, Norwell Public Library (Norwell)


The Norwell Public Library's new building (designed by the renowned Oudens Ello Architecture Firm) opened to the public in June of 2021.  The library's design makes a connection with nature through its stunning open space design and large windows letting light in throughout all areas. The library has a Technology/Maker Lab, spacious Children's room, Teen room, Community Meeting and Study rooms, local History room, Café area, and is technology and Wi-Fi friendly.  The spacious seating areas include two large outdoor porches for all to enjoy.


$81,870 - $94,264; salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.


Responsible for the management, planning, direction, administration and evaluation of all library functions and services to effectively meet the growing diversity of cultural, recreational, informational, and educational library needs of the community in accordance with the regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the by-laws of the Town and the laws of the Commonwealth.  Receives policy direction from the Library Board of Trustees and administrative direction from the Town Administrator.  Accountable for the direction and success of programs accomplished through others.  Analyzes program objectives, determines various work operations needed to achieve them, estimates the financial and staff resources required, allocating the available funds and staff.  Reports to the Trustees periodically on the achievement and status of program objectives and recommends new goals.  Recommends program goals and develops plans for achieving short and long-range objectives; determines organizational structure, operating guidelines and work operations; formulates, prepares and defines budget and manpower requests and accounts for effective use of funds and staff provided. Coordinates program efforts with the department and other Town departments; delegates authority to subordinate supervisors and holds them responsible for e the performance of their unit's work; reviews work in terms of accomplishment of program objectives and provides progress reports, approves standards establishing quality and quantity of work, and assists or oversees the personnel function, recommends hiring, recommends disciplining and identifies training opportunities for employees.  Supervises all full-time, part-time and substitute/on call Library employees and all Library volunteers.  Coordinates with Facilities Manager in regards to any building maintenance requirements.  The latter will be of great importance as the "punch list" items for the new building are addressed.  Please visit for the job description under Human Resources/Job Opportunities.  

The Library Director position is open due to an upcoming retirement at the end of 2021.

The successful candidate must have a Master's degree in Library Science accredited by the American Library Association and five (5) years or more professional experience involving finance, budgeting, facilities, management, library automation, and personnel administration.  Note:  At least three (3) of these years should be progressive in an administrative and/or supervisory capacity, preferably in municipal library environment.  Proof of Certificate of Professional Librarianship issued by the MBLC required.

The candidate must possess comprehensive knowledge of the principals, practices of professional library work, the organization and management of library operations, library materials and current trends in library services.  Demonstrate technological knowledge (including digital formats) and training, strong grant writing skills, organizational and evaluation skills, fund raising experience, business management practices and financial budgets, and effective interpersonal skills.  The top candidate must have an intellectual curiosity and be able to grow the Library's role as the community center in all its relationships.  The Library Director will be responsible for completing any new building close-out requirements, consulting with the Library Building Committee and Board of Trustees.
