Archivist, Woburn Public Library (Woburn)

Position

The Woburn Public Library is seeking a professional Archivist to supervise the operations of the Glennon Archives.  The successful candidate will be responsible for caring for and providing access to documents and other research materials relating to the history of the City of Woburn. He/She/They will develop community programming to enthusiastically engage the Woburn community by bringing the Archives to the community.

Essential Tasks:  

·         Responsible for overseeing the operation of the Glennon Archives.  This includes acquiring, appraising, accessioning, describing and preserving records, photographs and artifacts, creating finding aids to facilitate access, and responding to research inquiries.  

·         Responsible for the digitization of materials and manages access to digital collections.  

·         Creates archival exhibits and materials to be experienced both virtually and in person.

·         Oversees and assists in cataloging of Archival materials.

·         Recommends and implements approved policies and systems to effect operational efficiency and improvement.

·         Supervises one part-time employee and volunteers.

·         Prepares statistical and departmental reports. Develops and presents informative outreach programs focusing on local history.  

·         Makes recommendations regarding acquisitions for the Archives and the Library collection.  

·         Prepares grant proposals for archival projects.

·         Attends professional meetings.

Provides routine public service at the reference desk and other public service desks when needed and participates in special library projects as required or necessary.

Works under the general supervision of the Library Director and/or Assistant Director.

Work Environment:

The 1879 building, designed by H.H. Richardson was completely restored and a beautiful glass addition was completed in 2019.  The building is a beautiful state of the art facility.

Full time, 37.5 hours per week.  Some evenings and Saturdays are required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:  

MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited institution with archives specialization. Well organized and ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.   Knowledge of current issues and trends in collection and exhibition management is desirable. Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team to promote the library to the community. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively. Experience working in a library or archive and some experience supervising others is preferred.
