Lower School Librarian, Moses Brown School (Providence, RI)

Moses Brown School, a Friends day school for 790 students N-12 in Providence, Rhode Island, seeks a collaborative, dynamic, and innovative librarian for the Lower School (grades N-4), starting August 2022. Candidates will be passionate about teaching and love working with young children, embracing and supporting the school’s mission to nurture the inner promise of each student and instill the utmost care for learning, people, and place. The position reports to the Lower School Head and will have a unique opportunity to shepherd the opening of the Debbie Goff Library. 

Moses Brown School Libraries are central to the academic and creative communities of our school.  Love of story and inquiry for personal and intellectual growth are nurtured by our library team. They provide inviting facilities and an innovative program that enable our community to become confident, proficient, and ethical creators and users of information. This is supported by

a safe and welcoming place for study and collaboration;

instruction and promotion of scholarly (age-appropriate) research and learning;

encouraging values of curiosity, integrity, and respect; and

development of lifelong reading for pleasure and personal growth.

Roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Teacher: conducts weekly classes for grades N-4, demonstrating a passion for and an extensive knowledge of children's literature, publishing trends, and children's authors; promotes literacy and reading for fun through special programs such as National Library Week, summer reading lists, etc.; demonstrates classroom management skills.

Information Specialist: fosters collaboration with teachers to instruct students in all matters related to research and inquiry, citation, information gathering, evaluation, and synthesis; acts as a research resource and instructor for the LS classroom teachers and staff; builds and maintains an up to date digital and print library collection that supports the LS curriculum.

Instructional Consultant: collaborates actively with classroom teachers to integrate the information literacy skills curriculum into the classroom curricula; pursues knowledge of current educational theory and practice.

Program Administrator: keeps necessary library records, such as usage statistics; maintains LS Library online catalog and patron records; co-manages the LS library budget along with Library Director; assists in development and implementation of library policies and procedures; sets long- and short-term goals for the LS program; supervises parent volunteers; collaborates on the annual Book Fair.

Community Member: As a Lower School faculty and library team member, participates in faculty and library meetings; all-school meetings, committees, and events; and co-curricular activities; supports the library mission and positive school morale.


A Master’s degree in library science or equivalent. Lower elementary teaching experience is preferred. Compensation is competitive and offers excellent benefits.
