Head of Borrower Services, Jones Library (Amherst)

The Town of Amherst is seeking applicants to fill the role of Librarian II/Head of Borrower Services for the Jones Library to perform professional library work for the general public. This position is crucial for keeping the library thriving and requires supervising staff- including Borrower Services staff, full and part-time employees, work-study students, and volunteers. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in technology and library software, library experience, a Master's Degree in Library Science, supervisory experience, and reference desk experience.

Major Duties
1. Recommends, trains, and supervises Borrower Services staff. Conducts annual reviews and evaluations. Schedules substitute help as needed and schedules desk assignments for adequate public services. Trains and supervises volunteers.

2. Responsible for proper functioning of the automated circulation system which includes check-out and return of materials, overdue notices, billing operations, reserve book system, and interlibrary lending.

3. Instructs public in use of library collections, services, resources, and technologies, including computers, scanners, printers, and personal electronic devices. Explains policies and procedures for reserve requests, interlibrary loan, and purchase requests.

4. Acts as Implementation Coordinator for CW MARS computer network. Informs other staff on system software updates and changes. Coordinates all requests for written reports, software modifications, changes to system parameters, and telecommunications adjustments with central site staff.

5. Participates on Reference Team. Provides research assistance, technology support and instruction, and readers’ advisory services.

6. Selects materials in assigned areas as a part of the Collection Development Team. Selects print and non-print materials; reviews and keeps abreast of major selection tools; examines books, periodicals, and audiovisual collections which are outdated or not used and withdraws materials. Assures that collection purchases are within budget.

7. Keeps accurate statistics on desk staff activities and collection use. Prepares monthly and annual reports and maintains necessary operating records.

8. Acts as Coordinator of Homebound Services, arranging for delivery of Library materials to homebound patrons.

9. May be asked to supervise re-shelving of adult Library materials in accurate order in conjunction with Assistant Head of Borrower Services.

10. Participates in the Library Policies and Development Team as a member of staff committees. Communicates official plans, policies and procedures to staff and to the general public. Adjusts errors and handles public complaints.

11. May be asked to participate in Adult Programming Team, collaborating with team leader by developing programs in keeping with Library programming plan.

12. Maintains building security by enforcing Library use rules and regulations and by clearing designated areas in fire and emergency evacuations.

13. Attends professional workshops and conferences to keep informed on developments in library science. Participates on staff committees to develop procedures and recommend policies.

14. May perform the duties of desk staff to maintain public services. Performs other duties as assigned.


Desired Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and Master's Degree in Library Science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association, and a minimum of three years experience in library operations, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
