Reporting to the Senior Collections Conservator for Collections Care, the Preservation Review Librarian is an integral member of the Preservation Services team who works closely with colleagues throughout the library system to assess and address the preservation needs of Harvard Library's general and actively circulating collections. The incumbent manages the preservation review and commercial library binding programs in Collections Care. Preservation review includes identifying damaged and deteriorated materials; assessing and sorting these items into workflows for appropriate conservation attention and treatment; training library staff on the identification and care of vulnerable collections. Commercial library binding includes managing a robust binding program with multiple Library stakeholders, acting as a liaison with the binding vendor and integrating the work with other units within the Library.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

General
In consultation with relevant stakeholders, identifies preservation needs for general collections materials and develops a preservation review or commercial library binding plan. This can include liaising with multiple groups within the Harvard Library to identify, implement and coordinate workflows.
Collaborates with Collections Care conservators to develop unit workflows and project plans based on available resources and unit capacity.
Supervises two full-time staff and student employees who assist with preservation review and commercial library binding work. Supervisory duties include training, conducting performance evaluations, assisting with the posting of jobs, and serving on search committees.
Actively participates in the management and day-today operations of the Collections Care unit.
Resolves bibliographic issues, interprets, and edits Alma records as appropriate, and serves as the resource on bibliographic concerns for Collections Care staff.
Participates in preservation initiatives, including project management, long-range program planning, and disaster recovery.
Assists with preservation training for Harvard Library staff (such as identification of vulnerable collection materials, careful handling, transport of materials, etc.).
Serves on the Library Collections Emergency Team (LCET).
Serves on the Preservation Liaison Team.
Serves as Alma Liaison for Preservation Services Department.
May serve on library-wide and departmental working groups.
Works creatively and collaboratively with staff across Preservation Services to meet the overall goals of the department as appropriate.

Preservation Review
Tracks physical materials entering/leaving Collections Care.
Reviews newly acquired and existing general collection materials and assigns items to appropriate treatment workflows, with special consideration to format, condition, provenance, and shared collection (ReCAP, etc) retention status.
Manages departmental email and systems to identify materials requiring expedited treatment for immediate patron use.

Commercial Library Binding
Manages the commercial library binding work for multiple libraries across the Harvard Library system.
Establishes productivity and quality standards for commercial binding for Harvard Library collections and ensures that they are met.
Collaborates with Library stakeholders to document policies, procedures, and guidelines for binding.
Maintains communication with the Library's commercial binder to ensure that technical and service expectations are understood, facilitates workflow, solves problems, and keeps abreast of new developments in the binding industry.
Assists with the development and monitoring of the binding budget, maintains statistics, and prepares reports.


Basic Qualifications
MLS or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience, with a specialization in preservation preferred.
2+ years of preservation related experience required.
Knowledge of preservation principles and practices, binding structures, book manufacturing industry, and commercial library binding technology.
Demonstrated ability to lead or supervise other staff.
Experience with integrated library system (ILS) software.


Additional Qualifications and Skills


Working knowledge of standard software applications, including Microsoft Office.

Experience with Alma and ABLE, preferred.

Experience working in a research library setting, preferred.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.

Ability to initiate and adapt to change, to analyze and solve problems, and to be flexible and work collaboratively.

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to establish priorities and achieve goals.

Ability to plan, organize, and direct workflows in a production setting; to train, supervise, motivate, and evaluate staff; to encourage teamwork and staff development; to initiate and adapt to change; to analyze and solve problems; to be flexible and work collaboratively.

Project management experience, preferred.


Physical Requirements

This position may involve lifting and moving loads weighing up to 40 pounds.
