Library Assistant, Bigelow Free Public Library (Clinton)

The Bigelow Free Public Library seeks two part-time library assistants (20 hours & 15 hours). The ideal candidate would be a customer service superstar with patience, tact, creativity, enthusiasm, and schedule flexibility.  Preferred candidates will be bi-lingual in Portuguese or Spanish and have an excellent grasp of computer technology; Evergreen ILS experience a plus. Hours will include some nights and weekends, but may change as needed.

Position Title:        Library Assistant 

Reports to:            Department Head/Library Director

Position Status[1]:      Non-Exempt

                                                                                                                                                            

I.                   Purpose
The Library Assistant is primarily responsible for providing customer service and for supporting library services.

II.                Supervision and Direction
This position works under the general supervision of the Library Director with daily supervision from departmental supervisor.

III.             Essential Functions[2]
The Library Assistant must have the ability to competently and professionally perform essential job duties, including, but not limited to, the following:

1.                  Open the Library each morning and prepare the Library for customers.
2.                  Close the Library each night and perform all associated tasks.  
3.                  Perform circulation and customer service duties with all associated tasks, including, but not limited to, processing delivery boxes; managing Inter Library Loan (ILL) materials.
4.                  Perform service desk duties and all associated customer service tasks, including, but not limited to, assisting patrons with research, computer or software programs.
5.                  Perform cataloging duties, including, but not limited to, processing and cataloging new or donated materials.
6.                  Plan, prepare and execute staff-run library programs, including, but not limited to, managing or recommending programs; promoting upcoming programs and supporting community service efforts.   Maintain public information including, but not limited to, current community service flyers, print and media materials, digital and social media applications.
7.                  Process and manage periodicals.
8.                  Perform other duties as assigned.
IV.             Physical Requirements (to perform essential job functions)
1.                  Ability to do minimal physical activity in the performance of administrative (office) duties, such as standing, walking, minor lifting up to 10 lbs., and maneuvering stairs.
2.                  Ability to do moderate physical activity, such as lifting up to 25 lbs., in the performance of non-administrative duties.
3.                  Ability to operate standard office equipment with proficiency, including, but not limited to, computers, printers, scanners and fax. 
4.                  Ability to bend, kneel and twist.
5.                  Ability to hear and speak.
6.                  Ability to reach with hands and arms.
7.                  Good manual dexterity, with both hands, to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.  
8.                  Ability to see, including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
9.                  Ability to perform essential job functions, including regular attendance.
V.                Minimum Qualifications
1.                  Education and Experience  
Degree from an accredited college with one or more years of relevant experience within a public library system preferred, or combination of equivalent education and experience.
2.                  Knowledge, Ability and Skills
(a)               Must enjoy working with the public.
(b)               Must have excellent customer service skills.
(c)               Must have the ability to use library equipment, online catalogs (experience with Evergreen a plus), knowledge of Microsoft Office and familiarity with e-books, e-readers and electronic library resources.
(d)               Must be able to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with patrons of all ages, volunteers, community partners, colleagues and supervisors.
(e)               Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
(f)                Must have the ability to be flexible and work in fast-paced work environment.
(g)               Must be accurate and attentive to detail.
3.                  Special Requirements.  
(a)        Must be available to work evening hours and Saturdays as required.
                        (b)        Must be willing to undergo and successfully complete a CORI background                                    check
