Cataloging Assistant, Congregational Library & Archvies (Boston)

About the Library

The Congregational Library & Archives is a special library located on Beacon Hill in Boston focused on Congregational and Early American Religious History. The library has a collection of over 250k items ranging from the 16th through the 21st century. The library is hiring a cataloging assistant to address a backlog of uncataloged historical material. This is an excellent opportunity for a current student or recent graduate interested in working with special collections. Depending on interest and experience, there may be opportunities to assist with other projects, such as collection inventories or exhibitions.

Job Purpose

At the direction of the Librarian, the Cataloging Assistant helps make the Congregational Library’s collections more accessible by creating and maintaining accurate and detailed bibliographic records for books, pamphlets, periodicals, etc.

This is a part-time, permanent position, up to 20 hours/week. Days and times may be flexible, but must take place during the library's operating hours, M-F 9a-5p

Job Duties and Responsibilities

-Performs simple and complex copy cataloging using OCLC Connexion.
-Uploads and edits catalog records in the Library’s ILS, Liberty 5 according to local cataloging policies.
-Maintains accurate catalog records in the Library’s ILS and makes necessary revisions.
-Assigns classification numbers according to the Library’s unique classification system.
-Physically prepares materials for placement on the shelves which may include performing minor preservation work.
-Other Duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

-Some coursework towards the completion of an MLIS from an ALA accredited institution.
-0-1 year experience in a library.
 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

-Professional curiosity about library and archival theory, concepts and methods, American, Congregational and religious history and other topics related to the collection.
-Working knowledge of RDA, AACR2, DCRM(b), LCCS, LCSH, and MARC formats and standards.
-High level of attention to detail.
-Familiarity with proper handling of historical materials
-Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats
-High level of proficiency with computers and desktop applications, including Microsoft Office suite (especially Word and Excel)
 

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Experience

-Coursework in Descriptive Cataloging and/or Subject Cataloging and Classification
 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

-Familiarity with ethical issues related to the cataloging and description of historical materials.
-Familiarity with cataloging web applications such as OCLC Connexion, RDAToolkit, and ClassWeb.
