The Library is a fast paced, service driven environment with ever-changing, multiple priorities and demands. The Head of Children’s Services is responsible for managing the Children’s Department under the supervision of the Library Director and in close cooperation with the Assistant Director. Performs duties with very minimal supervision following established procedures and deadlines.  Assumes responsibilities of person in charge of building when necessary. Has latitude to make decisions regarding priorities for both routine schedules and responses to non-routine and emergency situations.  Responsibility for judgment, thoroughness and competence is essential. This position requires the ability to maintain a positive, professional attitude and an unflappable demeanor with a healthy dose of humor.

This is a union position, Full Time, $30.73 per hour, 36 hours per week; with regular evening and weekend hours required.


1.       An MLS and 5 - 7 years’ experience in a public library children’s department including supervisory experience are required. MLS candidates may be considered.

2.       Ability to manage a motivated and creative staff effectively, including delegation of tasks and feedback to a variety of full and part time staff.

3.       Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative.

4.       A strong commitment to excellent customer service and providing a welcoming environment to all patrons is required.

5.       Ability to communicate and work well in a team environment with other library departments.

6.       Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with any and all city/local agencies serving children ages 0-12 and their caregivers is essential.

7.       Demonstrated problem-solving skills, creativity, initiative and enthusiasm.

8.       Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality with patron records is essential.

9.       Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, patiently and courteously with co-workers, patrons and other community members.

10.    Must enjoy working with the public, including people of all ages and backgrounds.

11.    Must have a passion for encouraging literacy in children and be comfortable working with children individually and in groups, as well as caregivers and educators.

12.    Ability to focus on multiple tasks/priorities with frequent, unscheduled interruptions.

13.    Ability to provide reliable attendance at work to ensure the smooth operation of a busy public desk is essential.

14.    Excellent written and oral communication skills.

15.    Experience with automated library systems; familiarity with open source library systems (i.e. Evergreen) a plus.
