Job Summary

Access Services supports the Harvard Library mission by delivering a high standard of service; cultivating a welcoming environment that is supportive of academic research and inquiry; stewarding the university collection; and connecting the academic community to the vast array of library resources. We support the teaching and scholarly mission of the University through collaborative partnerships with the community of students, scholars and professionals at Harvard and beyond. Additionally, Access Services staff members are committed to delivering high-quality customer service; timely access to collections; maintaining the integrity and security of library resources and materials; and accommodating user needs in accordance with the priorities and objectives of the Harvard Library.

Under the general guidance of the Access Services Manager for Reshelving and Collection Management, the Access Services Coordinator assists in the operation of the Widener End Processing Hub as well as space management of the Widener collection. In this role, work is frequently performed with a high degree of judgement and latitude. They carry out a variety of advanced library duties requiring substantial knowledge of library systems and procedures to provide access to collections and process library materials, ensuring that materials are ready for patron use. Working cooperatively with colleagues in Access Services and other Harvard Library units, this position supports a broad range of public services for library users and actively engages in cross-unit collaboration.

Due to the varied nature and volume of the work in Access Services and Collection management, all Access Services staff may be called upon to contribute to work in other areas, including reshelving and materials transfer workflows.

This position requires work to be completed onsite. Working hours will generally be 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday.

Basic Qualifications
*High school diploma
*3 or more years library or equivalent work experience
*Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and collaborative tools (e.g. Google Suite, Microsoft Teams, etc.)

Additional Qualifications and Skills

*Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and anti-racism.

*College degree preferred.

*Demonstrated experience showing attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.

*Excellent oral and written communication skills.

*Bibliographic facility in western European languages preferred.

*Experience with a library management system, especially Ex Libris' Alma system preferred.

*Experience hiring, training, scheduling, and distributing work to student or temporary staff preferred.

*Familiarity with library preservation practices.

*Ability to respond positively to fluctuating workflows and changes in routine.

*Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and patrons, successfully deliver excellent customer service and prioritize service needs in a busy, dynamic public service environment.
*Ability to solve problems effectively and exercise discerning judgment.
*Good oral English language communication and interpersonal skills; ability to read and write routine procedures and correspondence.

*Sensitivity to working in a diverse user environment.

*Ability to perform repetitive work accurately with attention to detail for sustained periods in a high-volume, production-oriented environment; ability to prioritize workflow with minimal supervision.

*Demonstrated experience with creating detailed workflow instructions and documentation.

Physical Requirements

*Must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
*Employee must be able handle books and other library material, including moving and shifting these materials between workstations, shelves, book trucks and boxes.
*While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to access shelving that is above 5 feet or flush with the ground.
*May be sitting for much of the day.
