Young Adult-Technology Librarian, Norwell Public Library (Norwell)


The Young Adult/Technology Librarian is responsible for the overall planning and delivery of teen services and programs at the Library.  Employee is responsible for all aspects of library technology, including hardware, software, and peripheral equipment. Reports to the Library Director and works under his/her direction or his/her designee.   Employee supervises library staff during evening and weekend shifts.

Manages, develops, and delivers innovative technology and other programing for teens; Conducts regular community needs assessments; Leads staff and patron technology training sessions, both one-on-one and in groups; Oversees the teen room and assists patrons as needed in Adult/Teen Services; Provides reader’s advisory and reference services to teens and adults; Manages the young adult collection, including selection and weeding of materials to   ensure the content is based on needs of community; creates teen room displays; Plans and implements outreach initiatives for young adults in grade 7 and up; Creates content for the teen pages on the library’s website and social media; Assists patrons with the use of a range of technology, such as media format conversion, e-equipment, 3-D printers, and high resolution scanners; Assists patrons with accessing and downloading e-Books and other e-resources from mobile devices; Maintains and troubleshoots technology throughout the library; Supports general library activities such as covering library service areas for adults, teens and children as assigned; Represents the library at OCLN and community meetings; Stays up-to-date on professional development through participation in professional organizations, OCLN meetings, workshops, and continuing education opportunities; Supervises library staff during evening and weekend shifts; and Performs other similar or related duties, as required or as situation dictates.    



Master of Science degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program required, plus a minimum of two years of professional library experience with supervisory or administrative experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in working for and with young adults (ages 12 to 18).  


Knowledge/Skills:  Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of young adults.  Knowledge of current trends in library services for and with young adults.  Knowledge of standard library procedures, current information technology, Internet and database search capabilities.  Knowledge of connected learning and ability to design programs that embed connected learning principles.  Knowledge of best practices in teen services.  Knowledge of best practices in community assessment and engagement. Knowledge of effective practices in evaluating and outcomes measurement.

Abilities:  Ability to communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing, including through email.  Ability to identify and translate young adult needs and interest into effective library services and programs.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteer groups and to service the public courteously.  Ability to recognize and set priorities, and to use initiative and independent judgement in a variety of situations.  Ability to learn and stay current with emerging technology, including digital media.  Must be able to speak distinctly to large groups.  Must be available to work evenings and weekends.

Salary Range

$52,547.00 - $57,775.00  / year

Salary Notes

FY'23 Salary range anticipates a 2% increase subject to Town Meeting approval.
