Library Assistant III - Technical Services, Jones Library (Amherst)

Job Summary
Performs a variety of clerical, technical, and supervisory tasks, primarily in the cataloging and processing of all library materials.

Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Head of Technical Services, who provides instruction as needed. Performs regular duties without close supervision. Refers situations not covered by procedures to supervisor.

Supervision Exercised
Responsible for own work. Trains and supervises lower level employees and volunteers, as directed by the Head of Technical Services.

Major Duties
1. Performs data entry for all new library materials. Verifies cataloging information of all physical circulating library materials. Creates original bibliographic MARC records, if needed, according to AARC and local consortia guidelines. Creates, edits and attaches holdings records as necessary.

2. Verifies, produces and/or applies labels, stamps, covers, pockets, barcodes, security tags etc. to materials, or supervises their application.

3. Receives new shipments of materials, matching pack lists to invoices. Marks materials as received in database to update records and funds accordingly.

4. Withdraws materials from collections; reinstates returned discarded books; does some book repair and oversees book repair volunteers. Responds to requests from materials selectors to add non-traditional items for checkout.

5. Inventories and regularly orders department supplies necessary for processing materials.

6. Performs other similar collection-based duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Desired Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED, supplemented by two years of post-secondary education or training in library science, liberal arts, education or a related field, and at least two (2) years of experience in library services or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of library procedures and operations; ability to use OCLC and MARC records, working knowledge of classification, cataloging, acquisitions, processing, and library computer systems; working knowledge of basic office procedures; and skill in operation of listed tools and equipment. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other staff.

Library computer software and system(s) and application software, such as Microsoft Office applications, Microsoft Windows file system, collaborative software, and video conferencing software.
