Head Reference Librarian, Burlington Public Library (Burlington)

The Burlington Public Library is seeking a forward-thinking individual to oversee the Reference Department in a library responding to the changing environment.  Reporting to the Director of the Library, this position is full-time (35 hours per week) and is a union position included within the Burlington Municipal Employees Association (BMEA).  The position directly supervises a staff of two (2) Reference Department library professionals, four (4) library pages and volunteers.

Examples of work:

Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates professional reference librarians and library pages assigned to the reference department. Supervises reference department volunteers. 
Makes supervisory decisions in the absence of the Library Director and Assistant Director.
Creates procedures and workflows for Reference Department.
Assists patrons with information requests and performs detailed research work utilizing print sources, subscription databases, and the Internet.   
Analyzes the adult collection, including print and online services, to determine strengths and weaknesses and implements collection development in areas which need improvement.
Identifies services, resources and programs for planning and marketing products to enhance community awareness of the library.
Maintains the local history collection.  Assists patrons with the local history sources and genealogy questions.
Performs technology related tasks including troubleshooting hardware and software issues on computers and peripherals. Creates and contributes content to the Library’s website and social networking tools.
Develops and presents programs and training workshops to meet the needs of the public.

Qualifications

Masters of Library Science degree and three years of professional library experience, including experience in reference services; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to supervise and direct the work of others. Excellent computer skills and flexibility to adapt to constantly changing technology.  Excellent customer service skills. Advanced research skills.  Creativity and imagination to effectively publicize and promote programs.
