Youth Services Librarian II, Boston Public Library (Boston)

Position Overview
Under supervision and within the framework of Library policies and practices, to assume responsibility for the effective execution of the Library’s program of service to a diverse population and to perform professional work requiring application of substantial professional knowledge and experience.

Scope of Responsibility

Initiates, plans, and implements the Library’s programs of service to youth from 0 - 18 and families, through personal consultations, reference, and readers’ advisory services, public training, and programs.
Develops and implements activities to stimulate the use of the Library by the community, especially through outreach to schools and other agencies that serve youth.
Develops and implements engaging and comprehensive programs for youth, as well as parents, caregivers and the community organizations serving them.
Performs difficult and involved reference work, conducts training classes for the public on library resources and technologies.
Primarily responsible for the development of the youth collections.
Compiles annotated lists and bibliographies related to the Library’s collection.
Plans, recommends and conducts a variety of programs and services for youth.
May be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the branch in the absence of the Branch librarian or other ranking staff member.
Actively participates in system-wide committees, training and other professional activities.
Assists in training professional and non-professional staff.
Performs other related and comparable duties as assigned.


Broad knowledge of Library policies, practices, and procedures.
Knowledge of library services for youth.
Knowledge of current research and trends in the field of youth literature.
Knowledge of techniques of programming for youth.
Demonstrated interest in children and teens and in library work with these age groups.
Willingness and ability to develop strong, interactive community relationships.
Willingness to assume responsibility and carry out assignments independently.
Good oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to use current and emerging electronic and print resources.
Ability to work well with staff and public.
Initiative, dependability, good judgment, tact and courtesy.


Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
Education – A bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university and a master’s degree in library and information science from an accredited library school. Courses in youth literature and/or work taken for credit, at an accredited library school. In exceptional instances specialized education, training and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of the educational requirements.
Experience – Two years of pertinent professional experience or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training sufficient to indicate ability to do the work. Knowledge of youth literature including bibliographic tools and sources pertaining to youth literature and work; knowledge of the techniques of programming for youth.
Language – Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) language skills preferred.

Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
Residency - Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
CORI - Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
