Library Assistant, Children’s Services, Ashland Public Library (Ashland)


Under the direction of the Director of Children’s Services, the Library Assistant, Children’s Services is responsible for circulation desk functions using an automated circulation system, shelf maintenance, basic library statistics, outreach, and programming for the children’s room of the Ashland Library. This position is invested in providing excellent, welcoming, and joyful service to children and families in and around the Ashland community. It is a full time, 35 hour a week/benefitted position, working one evening and every Saturday of the week.

Support the Children’s Room operations at the library including but not limited to:

~Provides prompt, courteous and direct assistance to all patrons with basic information regarding use of library materials, equipment, systems and services
~Manages the children’s services desk and and adult desk as needed, independently and as part of a team Maintains and updates patron records
~Performs checkout, checkin, and reserves library materials
~Supports the Director of Children’s Services in choosing materials for the children’s room collections including relevant print and digital resources aimed at the specific interests and needs of the children in the community
~Plans and implements library programs and services which fulfill the diverse educational, recreational and personal needs of the children and families visiting the library
~Assists with creating and disseminating promotional materials related to the Library and Children’s Room
~Adopts a community engagement mindset and develops and maintains effective relationships with the families in the Children’s Room and Library

~Demonstrated ability to connect with children and families
~Plan and execute programs for children from birth through 12 years of age
~Provide reader’s advisory
~Comfort with technology and social media
~Participate in materials selection for children’s collections
~Participate in collection maintenance (weeding/shelf reading)
~Attending appropriate meetings and workshops

Physical Requirements:

Ability to operate a keyboard and other office equipment.  Required to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, talk, hear, write, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms, bend, climb, crouch and lift materials weighing up to 40 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job included close vision and distant vision.

Reports to:

Directly to Director of Children’s Services and ultimately the Library Director.


This is a permanent, full time, non-exempt, 35 hour position with the following schedule:  

Tuesdays            1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Wednesdays     10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Thursdays         10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Fridays              10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Saturdays           9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.


Grade C-7 per Agreement between the Town of Ashland and the Ashland Clerical Workers International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (U.A.W.) and its Local 1596.  Current salary range:  $16.5980 - $18.9941 per hour depending on level of experience.  Pro-rated benefits.


Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree preferred. MLS or MLS candidates from an ALA accredited program or degree candidate are encouraged to apply. The priorities for this position are an interest in children’s literacy, the ability to connect with children and their families, as well as the ability to communicate effectively and professionally.
