Head of Adult Services, Leominster Public Library (Leominster)

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Head of Adult Services is responsible for providing administrative, professional, and supervisory work in the area of Adult Services, including the development, planning, organizing, delivery, and evaluation of activities, operations and services; the implementation of effective procedures and processes; all other related work as required that is logical to the position.

SUPERVISION:

Works under the direction of the Director.  Performs day-to-day tasks with a high degree of independence. Work involves a variety of highly specialized work tasks with many details to monitor and manage. 

Complex and responsible duties require initiative and independent judgment to establish work plans and priorities, using and/or modifying established procedures to complete the work in accordance with established policies and standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

·          Administers the day-to-day operations of the Adult Services Department, including the Historical and Genealogy Librarian, the Young Adult Services Librarian, the Special Services Coordinator, and part-time staff.

·          Supervises Adult Services Department staff. 

·          Supervises other full-time and part-time library staff while working at Adult Department service desks. 

·          Participates in the interviewing, hiring, and training of Adult Services Department staff.

·          Facilitates quarterly Adult Services Department staff meetings. 

·          Works directly with the public at the library’s service desks assisting patrons with all types of reference and informational questions, whether in person, by phone, or via email.

·          Compiles, reviews and interprets statistical data regarding use of Adult Services.  Prepares regular statistical and management reports.

·          Supervises the development of the Adult Services Department collections, including print, non-print, and electronic resources, to ensure a current, well-rounded collection that is responsive to the changing needs of the community.

·          Develops and implements library services and policies in collaboration with Library Administration. 

·          Participates in long-range planning activities in collaboration with Library Administration.

·          Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of adult programming and special events.

·          Promotes library programs and services to the community in a variety of ways, i.e.  print, electronic, local access television, library tours and speaking engagements.

·          Establishes and maintains partnerships with area schools and organizations.

·          Attends information and instructional meetings and workshops related to Adult Services or library operations. 

·          Identifies, writes, and manages grants to enhance library programs and services.

·          Handles any problems, questions, or concerns relating to the Adult Services Department's collections, programs, and services.

·          Handles any other short-term duties deemed necessary by the Director.

Qualifications

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Master's Degree in Library Science, and a minimum of three (3) years responsible experience as a professional librarian in a public library, including one year in a supervisory capacity, OR an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Core Competencies:

·        A strong background in computers/technology and non-print materials formats.

·        Knowledge of reference resources and techniques as well as a strong commitment to public service and the provision of exceptional service.

·        Experience teaching general and specialized information literacy classes and excellent teaching and presentation skills.

·        Knowledge of current and emerging library principles, practices, and technologies. 

·        Ability to train library staff and patrons in new and existing technologies, and to simplify complex technological topics for novices.

·        Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.

·        Ability to work within a budget.

·        Demonstrates creativity, teamwork, innovation, flexibility, and a positive attitude.

·        Demonstrates poise in a busy setting serving patrons and staff with high expectations.

·        Excellent reference skills and ability to relate to patrons of all ages.

·        Demonstrated ability to work independently with little supervision and to work effectively in collaborative teams to achieve common goals.

·        Ability to develop and maintain effective knowledge-based relationships with vendors.

·        Experience in working with a diverse community.

Bilingual abilities desirable.

Requires a criminal records (CORI) check and a drug test.
