Makerspace Technology Specialist, Brandeis University (Waltham)

Brandeis University seeks to hire a Makerspace Technology Specialist who will provide support for hardware and software technologies in Makerspace environments. Acts as a technical resource for students, faculty and researchers, translating between teaching, learning, and research needs and technology solutions in collaboration with faculty, students, departmental technology staff, and Library staff.



In addition to supporting emerging technology in teaching, learning, and research across campus, the candidate will be responsible for the day to day operations, scheduling, logistics, access, status, and budget status of the Brandeis MakerLab and its coordination with other innovation spaces in the Brandeis Library. This role provides some first tier and second tier technical support for faculty, staff, and students who use the Makerspace. Provides high level project management for all active MakerLab projects. Collaborates closely with student clubs and local researchers to build community and overcome their technological hurdles. This will include learning and developing expertise in any specialized hardware and software tools not otherwise supported on campus and helping provide strategic vision for support of emerging and research technologies across the disciplines.

This is a union position. Employees working in this position are covered by the collective bargaining agreement between the University and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 888.  Provisions related to wages, benefits and other terms of employment are contained in the agreement.



Responsibilities:



Coordinate the MakerLab’s Day-to-day Operations (25%)

Manage the day to day operations of The Brandeis MakerLab. Help train newcomers in best practice Making techniques.
Build a culture of responsible stewardship of the maker space. Maintain a clean working environment and organized office space in the
MakerLab, and be willing to work in an open publicly viewable office.
Coordinates Microgrant programs for the MakerLab.
 

Facilitate Research and Teaching Projects - 25%

Works on special projects as deemed necessary by the Director for Research Technology and Innovation. Partners with faculty, researchers, staff and students to create new prototypes, pedagogies, and research technology workflows to address unmet needs of teaching, learning, and research across campus.
Work closely with the Research Technology and Innovation Student Worker staff to train up, document and transfer knowledge, and coordinate highly technical projects in order to create elegant solutions in an ever evolving hardware and software environment. This includes building and holding regular weekly trainings in emerging technologies through The MakerLab.
 

Workflow Research & Development - 20%

Provides technology support for The MakerLab’s systems, and projects that come through it consulting with Brandeis faculty, researchers, students and staff. Installs, configures, supports, and maintains advanced research workstations and research software/hardware in laboratories and other research settings, including building DIY prototypes when required.
Consults with faculty and researchers to overcome technical hurdles within their research workflows, and provide support, advice, and coordination to technical staff. Identify opportunities to migrate non-standard and emerging research technology solutions into sustainable enterprise services. Leverages student workers and creates documentation and training materials to standardize emerging technology workflows.
 

Outreach & Events - 15%

Engages with students, faculty, researchers, and staff to participate in ongoing programs of outreach to support Maker-technologies on campus, and to the broader Makerspace/Emerging Technology community across vendors and Higher Ed peers.
Helps with local tabling events, annual conferences and talks, and the MakerLab’s digital representation on the internet. Keeps the
MakerLab’s social media, and website updated.
 

Administrative - 10%

Assist in paperwork, statistics tracking and reporting, project management, ticketing, incident assessment, and software and hardware tool purchase recommendations and implementations.
Keeps an eye on the emerging landscape and recommends new technologies.

Qualifications

Education: B.A./B.S. or equivalent research experience. M.A./M.S. preferred.

Work Experience: 3-5 years related work experience

Licenses & Certifications: Hardware and 3D Design Certifications (Solidworks or Autodesk) preferred.



Additional Requirements:

Will need to work with confidential information; will be required to sign a confidentiality statement. Expected to undergo annual online and in person training.



Essential Skills:

Developed logical troubleshooting skills and the ability to build rapport with diverse campus constituencies.

Strong customer service skills both in person and remote support; ability to learn new tools rapidly and troubleshoot computer hardware and software problems and build

and teach introductory workshops on similar topics.



Passion for employing technology to advance research and scholarship. Strong service ethic. Demonstrated ability to manage a complex workload, set priorities and use good judgment in providing services based on organization's goals. Demonstrated ability to initiate, manage, and complete large projects.



Knowledge of operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux), computer hardware repair (triage and diagnosis), Digital Fabrication workflows (CAM and CAD for 3D Printing with FDM machines), Experience with Rapid Prototyping, early stage startup ideation, and Design Thinking.
