Special Library Assistant (Rare Books and Manuscripts Department), Boston Public Library (Boston)

This is a great opportunity to join a new and growing team in the Boston Public Library's Rare Books and Manuscripts Department. As one of two Special Library Assistants, you will help connect people in the City of Boston and from around the world with some of the Library’s most unique and distinctive collections. Situated in the BPL’s Central Library in Copley Square, we work to support the overall mission of BPL Special Collections, facilitating discovery and fostering public engagement with library’s rare and culturally significant holdings.

This position is ideal for someone considering a career in special collections and would be a particularly good fit for a recent MSLIS graduate looking to gain experience. Candidates with previous training in copy cataloging, or who have completed cataloging coursework in library school, are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will support and contribute to the work of describing, arranging, digitizing, and preserving some of the BPL’s rarest and most distinctive holdings, including printed books, manuscripts, and archival collections. Primary responsibilities include copy cataloging, accessioning, retrieving patron requests, stacks maintenance, and contributing to digitization workflows.

Qualifications

Education - High school graduate or equivalent. Additional education desirable. World Language skills desirable.
Experience - At least two years library experience or equivalent education and/or training to carry out responsibilities of the position. Experience with basic integrated library system software.
Requirements - Computer skills necessary to complete the job as described using Microsoft Windows software including Outlook, Word. and Excel. High sense of responsibility, excellent work habits and organizational skill. Familiarity with Library of Congress classification system. Ability to solve problems of sorting, storage, and retrieval of materials. Ability to read and interpret bibliographic information. Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and climb stairs.
CORI- Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders record information check with the City of Boston.

$40,000.00 - $54,000.00  / year

Salary Notes

Member of the Boston Public Library Employees Union Local 1526 and eligible for a variety of benefits. Hours/week = 35.
