Staff Librarian - Children's, Newburyport Public Library (Newburyport)
The Newburyport Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic professional with a love of public service for a fulltime Staff Librarian position in the Children’s and Teen Services Department, to deliver outstanding library services to patrons of all ages with a focus on children. This position includes reference, collection development and management, reader’s advisory, programming, and outreach activities. A sense of humor, strong communication skills, a team approach, and a friendly and welcoming demeanor are essential. NPL staff work in a collaborative workplace with a focus on excellent patron service. Ongoing professional development is encouraged and supported.
The Library is located in a busy walkable downtown city of 18,000 and receives strong community support. This is an opportunity to grow your librarian skillset in a positive environment where all staff contribute to making the NPL a destination.
Qualifications
Collections & Readers’ Advisory
· Select, evaluate, and maintain an inclusive collection in accordance with the library collection development policy and allocated budgets.
· Broad knowledge and appreciation of literature and media for young people.
Programming & Marketing
· Coordinate engaging library programs and services for children, taking into consideration principles of youth development; community assets; and the diverse educational, recreational, and personal needs of local youth.
· Actively promote library resources through programming, merchandizing, and creating book lists, resource guides, and displays.
Patron & Community Focus
· Maintain a pleasant, inviting, safe environment for children. Work effectively with the Youth Services team and with colleagues in other departments. Ensure proper supervision of patrons.
· Knowledge of developmental principles, materials and current issues related to serving youth; demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to program and service design and to establish positive relationships with youth.
· Keep current about the community, other area libraries, and librarianship.
Communication & Problem Solving
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a positive attitude.
· Sound judgment and strong problem-solving skills; flexibility, adaptability and professionalism in stressful situations and times of change.
Work Environment & Professional Development
· Ability to concentrate on tasks despite frequent interruptions and moderate noise levels.
· Commitment to doing all work through a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
· Maintain a working knowledge of contemporary trends and technology in the library profession by attending workshops and professional meetings.
· Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with library patrons of all ages and diverse backgrounds, including those who may be experiencing hardships that impact their behavior.
· Address and resolve patron issues.
This is a 35-hour/week union position with benefits, and includes one night per week and a rotation of Saturdays.
