Assistant Library Director, Salisbury Public Library (Salisbury)

The Assistant Director assists the Director in planning, organizing, and administering the operations, programs, collections, and services of the Library. The Assistant Director oversees all aspects of library services for adults including; reference services, database, periodical management, and the development and implementation of all adult programming. Additionally, the Assistant Director is responsible for staff scheduling, payroll, and the daily operations of the library in the absence of the Director, including, but not limited to, staff management, public relations, physical operations, and other issues that may arise.

 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Plans, executes, and evaluates program planning and service delivery for adults of all ages including, but not limited to: lectures, author visits, arts programming, workshops on current topics.

·         Suggests items for the Library collection as they relate to programming and outreach.

·         Develops, organizes, markets, and implements technology-related programs and services, including, but not limited to, lending hotspots, using personal technology devices, and integrating emerging technology tools.

·         Responsible for maintenance of the Library website through Weebly. 

·         Provides community outreach and serves as liaison for community organizations, town departments, and local businesses who work with or provide services to adults of all ages. Partners with such organizations to promote the Library and its services.

·         Researches, implements, and administers grant opportunities and activities.

·         Plans and updates the staff schedule on a regular basis.

·         Directs and participates in hiring, assignment, evaluation of employees, and training.

·         Participates in the annual evaluation of the Library’s Long Range Plan and assists the Director in Strategic Planning.

·         Acts as Volunteer Coordinator to recruit, select, schedule, train, supervise, evaluate, and determine the use of adult Library volunteers.

·         Stays current with Library policies and procedures, contemporary issues, trends, technology and updates staff accordingly.

·         Represents the Library and participates in job-related activities of professional and community organizations and attends job-related workshops, conferences, and other activities on a consortium level.

·         Plans, organizes, and implements special projects as needed by the Director.

·         Provides service on the Reference Desk on a regular basis, and other public desks, as needed.

·         Assists patrons with problems on computers, printers, and downloadable materials.

·         Assists patrons with all Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and book club requests.

·         Participates in technology updates and training. 

·         Updates Library telephone menu and alarm systems, as needed.

·         Contributes to policy statements for presentation to the Board of Trustees and interprets policies and regulations for staff and patrons. 

·         Responsible for opening and closing the library facility.



SUPERVISION



The Assistant Library Director reports directly to the Library Director and in the Director’s absence, the Assistant Library Director reports to the Town Manager.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS



Work environment is that similar to an office environment and includes varying levels of noise from patrons, telephones, office equipment, and computers. Must be able to constantly use computers, telephones, and other office equipment as required. Must be able to perform this job through regular interruptions in workflow. Environment includes interacting with co-workers, other town employees, patrons, trustees, children, young adults and vendors. Standing, walking, bending, crouching, seeing, hearing, talking, carrying, climbing and the ability to lift 20lbs is required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



To be considered for this position, applicants must have at a minimum the following:



Minimum of four years’ professional public library experience. Includes at least two years of experience working in a supervisory role preferred. Experience in program planning and marketing; and experience working on the Reference Desk. 



Must have exceptional written and oral communication skills. Must be competent with Microsoft Office applications and comfortable troubleshooting computer networking issues. Applicant must also be able to adapt to new software, technologies, and professional standards and feel confident training others on all library systems and tools are needed. 



Must be able to supervise the work of subordinate professional, technical, clerical and other staff members along with occasional volunteers. Must have proficiency with and experience troubleshooting a variety of technology tools, and a reliable means of transportation and willingness to travel for outreach, to run errands for programs, and to attend meetings and workshops. Must be able to work one scheduled evening per week and occasional Saturdays. Must be willing to work with a variety of groups including patrons, vendors, town employees, and other groups as needed.



DESIRED QUALITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS



Applicants will gain special consideration if they have the following qualities or qualifications:

·         Master’s in Library Science from an ALA accredited program strongly preferred

·         Experience using Symphony Workflows 

·         Exceptional written and oral communication skills and a variety of writing experience, including web content

·         Prior experience in a supervisory role and well-developed interpersonal skills and a positive disposition

·         Experience attending meeting and trainings at a Consortium level

·         Prior experience implementing innovative library standards or procedures
