Archives Assistant, Harvard Law School Library (Cambridge)

The Harvard Law School Library has an opening for one 14-hour per week position beginning in August 2022. The person in this role will assist with the processing and digitization of modern manuscript collections to help make these collections open for research using the library’s new minimal level processing workflows. The Archives Assistant will report to the Archivist for Special Projects and work in close collaboration with other Digital Lab staff.

Core duties include assisting with processing collections to the box and file level, including manuscript rehousing and creating descriptive metadata; and entering data into spreadsheets and ArchivesSpace. Additional duties may include assisting with accessioning and appraisal of manuscript collections; preparing collections for digital imaging, including removing staples, unfolding documents, and flagging specific materials; inventory tracking; quality control of scanned images; and deposit of digital objects to the Harvard Library Digital Repository Service.

The Harvard Law School Library promotes collaboration, innovation of processes and procedures, and high accountability in all phases of collections stewardship. The Digital Lab serves HLSL's mission to provide open access to the library’s world-class collections.

This is a part-time temporary non-benefited position, 14 hours per week through June 2023, with the possibility for an extension contingent upon continued funding.

We seek an individual possessing careful attention to detail, clear communication, flexibility, and proficiency and enjoyment working independently and in teams.

This position requires an MLS (archives concentration preferred) completed or in progress. Preference will be given to applicants with processing experience (internship experience qualifies), experience working with ArchivesSpace, knowledge of EAD, an interest in digitization workflows and digital collections, and experience handling special collections materials.
