Assistant Director, Haverhill Public Library (Haverhill)

Job Summary:

Professional, administrative, and supervisory work in assisting the Director in the overall management of the library.  Manages several major functional areas of the library, including personnel administration, general schedule, calendar and meeting room management, and Technical Services.  Serves as Acting Director in the Library Director’s absence.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

·  In the absence of the Director, manages the daily operations of the Library.

·  Assists the Library Director in maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff and library users.  Responds to all building emergencies, taking appropriate action when necessary.  Responsible for handling patron complaints, difficult patron interactions, and other potential security issues.

·  Maintains a strong presence in the public areas of the library, readily available to assist library users and staff, especially during busy times of the day.

·   Coordinates personnel services for the Library.  Assists in recruitment, evaluation, selection, and hiring of new employees and volunteers.  Assists Director and Department Heads in supervision of all library staff. Responsible for the day to day human resource and personnel requirements of the library.

·   Responsible for ensuring adequate staff coverage for all Library Departments.  Works directly in all Library Departments as needed.

·   Advises collection development throughout the library. May help with adult programming. 

·   Assists the Library Director in long range planning, goal setting, and policy development related to Library services, personnel and building issues.


Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
·  Extensive knowledge of library principles and practices.

·   Management, planning and supervisory skills and ability to function as part of a management team.

·   Ability to communicate effectively and clearly both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.

·   Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with a wide variety of people.

·    Extensive knowledge of collection development principles and practices.

·    Knowledge and skills in using automated library systems, PC technology, and electronic information systems.

Education and Experience:

Masters degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA program, plus 5 years of progressively responsible experience, including minimum of two years supervisory experience.

Physical Requirements:

·   Ability to push or pull carts.

·   Ability to perform a moderate amount of bending, squatting, lifting, and stretching.

·   Ability to use a stepladder or stool.

·   Ability to use voice communication system to answer the telephone.

·   Ability to use keyboard or computer workstation for extended periods of time.


Willingness to maintain a flexible schedule, which will require evening and weekend work. Most weeks will consist of five Monday-Friday day shifts, with Saturday and evening coverage needed at times. Sundays are mandatory October-May, will work approximately seven rotating Sundays during that time.

Salary Range

$70,000.00 - $85,000.00  / year

Negotiable within this range, based on experience.
