Acquisitions Librarian, Deerfield Academy (Deerfield)

Reporting to the Library Director, and collaborating with the whole library staff, the Acquisitions Librarian is responsible for the effective and efficient acquisition of student textbooks and library materials, managing digital resources through the library website, and cataloging materials as a part of an acquisition and accession process. Willingness to perform regular evening and/or weekend work, as Library needs require. In some circumstances, be prepared to assist during adverse weather and emergency situations to ensure essential services and service points are covered.

The primary duties of this year-round Group I Exempt position include: Manage timely, accurate, and efficient textbook acquisition, including faculty outreach, seeking and negotiating competitive pricing, bulk purchasing, accessioning and distribution to faculty to ensure acquisitions actively support teaching and learning needs. Manage the textbook buyback program including student solicitation with a focus on student-centered service; manage acquisition invoicing and recordkeeping; analyze textbook acquisitions data; collaborate on the ordering and acquisition of library materials; negotiate pricing with vendors when appropriate; support and guide faculty and members in copyright inquiries; perform original (including complex) and copy cataloging of all formats of library materials using national standards and local practices to facilitate their identification, access, and use; manage quality control of records and metadata on the library’s online catalog, including authority work; manage the administration of accurate cataloging services as a part of a team; manage platform access to databases and collaborate on the administration of digital resources (databases, online catalog, etc.); provide updates, troubleshooting, and maintenance in an ongoing manner, and as needed and manage aspects of the library website, with an emphasis on timely and accurate service.

Secondary duties include: welcoming Library users; providing information services and troubleshoot minor technology issues; staying up-to-date on best practices, professional and technology standards, license, regulatory requirements; contributing to a continuous process of assessment to ensure the Library’s success in advancing Deerfield Academy’s evolving goals in light of pedagogical, information technology, and user preference changes; monitoring usage of the building, making occasional rounds, and serving as a visible presence in physical spaces and assisting with the appropriate supervision and mentoring of students and Library staff.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess an MLS or equivalent degree required; enrollment in MLS degree program considered with completion by 2023, 1-3 years’ experience related to duties and responsibilities of the position; familiarity with an academic or boarding school setting preferred, Strong desire to work with teenage students, strong background in designing and teaching library instruction and conducting library research, ability to effectively instruct students and faculty, strong organizational skills and the ability to work at a high rate of accuracy; ability to provide coverage during instances of adverse weather and emergency situations to ensure services and service points are covered; ability to work independently with initiative, as well as be a part of a team; detail-oriented and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to serving the needs of a diverse community.



SIGN ON BONUS:  The successful candidate will receive a $1,000 sign-on bonus ($500 paid at the time of hire and $500 at the end of 90 days.)
