Teen Department Head, Waltham Public Library (Waltham)

The Waltham Public Library wants to be the best public library in the world and that’s what sets us apart when we’re adding to our team. Waltham is a diverse city with a mixed socio-economic group of about 65,000 residents. We have a growing population of families with young children, 12% of our population are teens and 40% of our residents speak a language other than English at home. Our Teen Room has grown into a nationally recognized space with programs such as Real Talk, For Freedoms and Graffiti Camp. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with diverse interests who can relate to an exciting group of urban 12-18 year olds with humility, patience and humor. You can empower them to pursue their needs and interests. You can cultivate positivity and inclusion without silencing expression. You’re comfortable in controlled chaos. You can wrangle without power-tripping. You can work at the pace of 21st century technology but slow down to be present when someone needs a friendly ear. We're looking for someone who is self-motivated, cares about accuracy, and can handle stressful situations with grace. Customer service experience is highly valued.

Duties include:  Overseeing all aspects of the Teen Department including: staff and volunteer scheduling, training, supervising and evaluating; developing policies and procedures for Teen services in accordance with City, Library, ALA and MLN policy; building relationships with our teen population and their families; supervising the Teen Room; helping youth and families locate materials and information; maintaining user accounts; public service provision; securing diverse and exciting enrichment programs for teen patrons; analytic collection development, acquisition and planning; statistical and budget report production; collaborating with other library departments & community organizations; participating on management team for overall planning and coordination of library services.

35 hours per week including a minimum of one evening per week and a minimum of one Saturday and one Sunday per month, year-round.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Library Science; five years of public library experience, with at least one year in a supervisory role; superior knowledge of the principles and practices of library work; ability to supervise employees efficiently; strong interest and comfort in working with patrons of all ages, but particularly Teens, in an urban setting; comfort and confidence in all matters of technology, including experience with social media; superior customer service skills; demonstrated commitment to public service and staff development; excellent management and organizational abilities as well as attention to detail; ability to work with library staff and a diverse general public in a constructive and welcoming manner; ability to perform under pressure and resolve problems, including handling emergencies; excellent communication and instructional abilities; extreme creativity. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Must pass a pre-employment physical with drug and alcohol screening, a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI) and a background check. The selected candidate will be required to submit three written and signed letters of reference within one week of accepting a conditional offer. Letters may not be dated older than two years. Preferred: Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Chinese, or Portuguese; facility with social media; facility with basic print or web design; experience with marketing and outreach; strong understanding of youth/teen development.
