Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Social Sciences Librarian position. The Social Sciences Librarian is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $73,000-commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

As part of a collaborative and dynamic team, the Social Sciences Librarian teaches in the library's program of course-integrated research instruction; builds relationships with a highly diverse group of faculty, students, and staff to support their information needs; serves as subject librarian and liaison for departments in the social sciences, teaching approaches and tools while building collections in these areas; and provides general research help and guides library users in discovering, accessing, and evaluating information in all formats.

Summary of Responsibilities

Research & Instruction

•    Creates responsive, disciplinary-focused research instruction for classes; teaches research skills in the context of specific courses and assignments; and supports a diverse set of students pursuing independent research projects.
•    Works with colleagues in Research & Instruction to facilitate inclusive learning and communication across the library and with campus partners
•    Provides research assistance in the main Robert Frost Library.
•    Incorporates emerging technologies and new uses of social-sciences research and data in response to evolving needs of publishing and information dissemination.

Collection Development and Liaison work

•    Serves as subject specialist and liaison to several academic departments in the social sciences: provides in-depth consultations about resources and research strategies, including qualitative and quantitative methods and working with data, legal and government information, and education studies; develops and manages relevant collections in all formats; connects faculty, students, and staff with library services.

Functional teams in library

•    Actively participates in outreach activities, committees, and work groups of the Library.



•    Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent.
•    A history of excellent classroom teaching; a commitment to undergraduates and undergraduate education; and a strong record of rapport and collaboration with faculty on assignments, course design, and pedagogical strategies.
•    Experience in an academic library or research institution with a focus on teaching, resource selection, and other public services.
•    Strong academic background, intellectual curiosity, and familiarity with social-sciences research and trends in scholarly communication.
•    Commitment to and demonstrated knowledge of diversity, inclusion, and equity issues as related to research instruction, collection development, and user-centered public service.
•    Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to advocate for the Library to a variety of constituents.


•    Additional graduate degree or undergraduate major in a social-sciences discipline; proficiency in a language besides English welcomed.
