Supervisor of Material Services (Technical Services), Newton Free Library (Newton)

The Newton Free Library is seeking an experienced, user-focused leader to oversee a department of 8 FTEs who receive, process, and prepare all of Newton’s materials for circulation. Under direction of the Library Director, the Supervisor of Material Services, (Technical Services), is responsible for planning operations and directing staff in the Materials Services division of the Library. Oversees the selection, acquisition, receipt and cataloging of library materials, the weeding of outdated or no longer used items, and the repair of damaged items. Supervises and substitutes for cataloging librarian and order clerk.  Newton uses the Sierra Acquisitions module, so experience with acquisitions areas of ILS will be highly beneficial.

Manages, develops and implements procedures for the acquisition, cataloging and processing of library materials and electronic collections. Records and tracks the expenditure of funds by category for all library materials and processes all invoices for payment within our integrated library system Acquisitions module. Prepares monthly, periodic, and annual reports for Library Director, Library Trustees and others. Experience with Sierra Acquisitions preferred.

Responsible for maintenance of the collection in our integrated library services database, editing and updating records, original cataloging of local history materials, and processing all new materials with barcodes, RFID tags and call # assignments. Assists in the development of historical and other collections. Represents the library on appropriate Minuteman committees and task forces. Acts as general liaison between the Library and Minuteman Library Network staff on all aspects of cataloging and acquisitions.

This position is an integral part of the Library’s collaborative leadership and planning team. Responsibilities include service desk coverage including one evening a week and weekend rotation.

37.5 hours per week. This position is part of a Union.


Qualifications: Masters in Library Science and five to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Broad knowledge of advanced professional library science, personnel administration and the operation of library equipment such as integrated library systems, automated materials handling equipment, personal computers and computer software.
