Assistant Library Director/Adult Services Librarian, North Adams Public Library (North Adams)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Library Director/Adult Services Librarian works closely with the library director to ensure the effective and responsive operation of the North Adams Public Library. As Assistant Library Director, assumes the responsibilities of the Director in the Director’s absence. As Adult Services Librarian, is responsible for management and operation of the Adult Services department. 



HOURS

Weekdays 8:30am to 5:00pm, generally. Will be part of a Saturday rotation with other full-time staff, and may have to work occasional Wednesday evenings to ensure coverage. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assistant Library Director responsibilities:

-Assume the duties of the Director in the Director’s absence. 

-Supervise and maintain library payroll, time-off, sick leave, and vacation time for all library employees.

-Assist Library Director in overall annual budget formation, review, and management.

-Work in conjunction with Library Director to write, procure, and manage funding obtained from grants at the local, state, and federal level.

-Assist Library Director in staff mediation regarding conflicts or concerns in the work environment, as well as staff evaluation.

-Participate in training and orientation of new library staff.-

-Oversee recruiting, training, and supervision of library volunteers and interns, in conjunction with other departments.

-Assist in the drafting of new policies and procedures, and update current policies and procedures as needed.

-Perform additional supervisory and other duties as required.

-In association with the Reference librarian will order materials.

-Responsible for processing invoices and getting them to the director for payment.
 

Adult Services Librarian duties:

-Provide vision and strategic planning for library services to adults.  

-Draft and maintain Adult Services department policies and procedures.

-Supervise, support, and schedule all Adult Services department staff and volunteers.

-Supervise and assist in collection development and maintenance for adult resources in all formats.

-Supervise Adult Services programming. 

-Compile, interpret, and report Adult Services statistical data to share with the library director, trustees, and stakeholders.

-Educate and assist patrons with library technology and applications.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree (Masters preferred) in appropriate field. 
Demonstrated understanding of library management and operations, including personnel management.
Experience with integrated library software (preferably CW MARS/Evergreen), MS Office, Google Suite.
 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

-Facility with technologies that further the goals of the library. Proficiency with productivity tools, including word processing, spreadsheets, calendars, etc. ---Proficiancy with integrated library software (preferably Evergreen/CW MARS), Facebook/Instagram administration, Canva or other publishing applications.
-Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron records.
-Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to analyze, problem solve, and set priorities.
-Demonstrated ability to work with the public and with co-workers.
-Willingness to work with other library departments as a team to ensure staffing coverage and professional service to all library users. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The work is performed in an office environment, and in common space open to the public. The work may require motor skills for activities such as using office equipment, including but not limited to telephones, personal computers, handheld technology, and other office equipment. May be required to lift objects such as files, office supplies, library materials, and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. May need to re-shelve, read, and retrieve materials at floor level and overhead. Essential position functions require ability to routinely read materials for general understanding and analytical purposes and ability to view documents on a computer screen.
