Youth Services Coordinator, Emily Williston Memorial Library (Easthampton)

The Emily Williston Memorial Library and Museum in Easthampton, MA, is seeking an energetic, innovative, caring, and capable Youth Services Coordinator to join our small team. The Youth Services Coordinator works under the general supervision of the Library Director to provide an engaging and welcoming experience for children and teens ages 0-18 and their families and caregivers. The position offers a wealth of creative freedom and the opportunity to serve a wide variety of library lovers in a small city that loves to read. 

The Youth Services Coordinator is responsible for the daily supervision of the Emily Williston Memorial Library Youth Department, including operational supervision of Library Assistants and volunteers. Planning, decision-making, and problem solving involving interpretation of library policy and the exercise of independent judgment are central to this position. In-depth knowledge, education, and training in advanced library procedures and practices, and a willingness to learn are essential. 

The Youth Services Coordinator is responsible for the creation and planning of the programming calendar, including regular events for all ages, Summer Reading, outreach, working closely with the public schools to provide materials and programs to support the school frameworks, and special events. They will also be responsible for hiring appropriate performers and program facilitators based on a budget approved by the Library Board and the Library Director, and for selecting, developing, and maintaining the children's collection, with assistance from staff. Relevant work experience with youth, knowledge of the literature, and background in developing programs are essential skills.  Familiarity with the array of technology currently offered in the public library setting and competency in standard office environment software is beneficial.  The ideal candidate will be a thoughtful, communicative, self-motivated professional who is dedicated to public service and the creation of a caring, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

This position is full-time salaried, 40 hours per week. Salary range is $41,600-$47,840 per year, depending on experience and qualification. Some scheduling flexibility is expected, to cover staffing, programming, and outreach needs.   

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

-Master of Library Science (MLS) is preferred or progress towards the MLS.
-Demonstrated knowledge of computer applications for libraries and online research skills, and the ability to implement this knowledge and skill as appropriate.
-Demonstrated knowledge of library resources in targeted subject area.
-Demonstrated patience and skill in dealing with general public, especially youth.

Physical & Mental Requirements: 

-Ability to read and/or otherwise interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
-Superior ability to write reports and correspondence. 
-Ability to speak before groups. 
-Ability to multi-task or thoughtfully arrange tasks.
-Ability to communicate fluently in English (additional language fluency a bonus!).
-The Youth Department is located in the basement of the Library.  The Library does not have an elevator.  Employees must be able to walk up and down flights of stairs.
-
Minimal physical effort is required to perform most duties. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop or reach with hands or arms. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and read a computer screen, or articulate the accommodations needed to make similar outcomes possible.  Equipment used includes personal computers, book trucks, office machines, audio-visual equipment.
