Local History Reference Librarian, Fitchburg Public Library (Fitchburg)

Under the supervision of the Public Services Librarian, the Local History Reference Librarian provides professional reference services primarily for adults in person, by telephone, and through e-mail; Manages the local history collection; Works with Public Services Librarian to create and implement programs highlighting the historical collection; Assists with outreach by representing and promoting the local history collection.

 Provide professional library reference services for patrons at public service desks, on the phone, and by email
including reader’s advisory, research using microfilm and other reference resources, teaching the use of
databases and other digital content, and more.
 Conduct collection development in assigned areas.
 Maintains the library’s local history collection and improves access/organization.
 Oversees acquisition and maintenance of local history materials.
 Seeks out and pursues opportunities for digitization of resources.
 Manages microfilm collection and ongoing process of re-organizing the local history collections for public
enjoyment.
 Provides specialized assistance to patrons utilizing resources in the local history collection.
 Refers patrons to other history institutions and organizations, when appropriate.
 Create displays, bibliographies, and other methods to promote the local history collection.
 With the appropriate department, plan, schedule and manage historical programming for all ages.
 Assist with grant writing.
 Promote the library through the use of social media and in person at events in the city.
 Contribute to the library newsletter and website.
 Participate in committees and attends trainings within CW MARS (our consortium), and state, regional and
national associations.
 Perform other similar and/or related duties, as required or as situation dictates

Qualifications

 Master’s Degree in Library Science with some professional experience working in a public library setting.
 Knowledge of archival procedures, reference and genealogy services.
 Valid Class D driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
 Extensive knowledge of library technology products, including but not limited to the Internet, online databases.
 Working knowledge of computer applications for library services such as Evergreen or another ILS, Microsoft
Windows products, Canva, Google docs and sheets, Constant Contact, etc.
 Comfortable using a variety of technology including computers, printers, microfilm readers, photocopiers and
general office equipment.
 Must possess:
  o Familiarity with historical and adult library materials.
  o Strong communication skills.
  o Professional appearance and demeanor.
  o Flexibility and be adaptable to change.
  o Ability to work effectively with the general public and co-workers.
 Demonstrate the required skills and the ability to perform all work assigned by successfully completing a six (6)
month probationary period.
 Must successfully complete pre-employment physical, drug screening and background check.
 Bilingual in English and Spanish highly desirable
