Library Assistant - Children's Room (LS-4), Milton Public Library (Milton)

The Milton Public Library is looking for a full-time para-professional to fill our Library Assistant position. This person will work primarily in the Children’s Department: a busy department responsible for over half of the Library’s physical circulation, and three-quarters of the Library’s programming including more than 10 weekly programs and larger ongoing programs such as Summer Reading.

General Statement of Duties

Provides library services to patrons primarily at public service desks, while working as an integral part of the Milton Public Library.  Working with families and children is the primary role for this position.

Supervision Received

Works under the general direction of the Assistant Director and Children’s Librarians, or independently when assigned.


·         Responsible for providing assistance to patrons at public service desks, including the Children’s Room Desk and the Circulation Desk. Duties include: charging materials to patrons, helping them with accounts and entering data in the Library’s computer system.  Duties also include maintaining the order of the collection, and gathering materials from the collection.

·         Responsible for assisting with program preparation, including craft bag assembly. May assist during children’s programs, when required.

·         Responsible for processing new Children’s materials in a variety of formats. This includes labeling books and activating RFID tags.


Education: Minimum requirement is a high school diploma; college degree preferred.

Experience:   A minimum of two years of library or equivalent office experience with three to five preferred. We are looking for someone with customer service experience and solid computer skills. The successful candidate must be a detail-oriented team player who functions well in a fast-paced environment. Experience working with children and families is desired.

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry books and other library materials, push loaded book trucks, and operate a computer keyboard and barcode scanner.  Willingness and ability to work in a variety of locations at the Library. Work schedule includes nights and weekends.
