Youth Serivces Librarian, Norwell Public Library (Norwell)

JOB SUMMARY

The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for the development, planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating of activities, operations, and expenditures within the Children’s department, including collection development, Reader Advisory, Reference, and library programs.  Related work includes occasional coverage of other departments and other related duties as assigned.  Plan and provide age-appropriate programming to promote literacy, stimulate joy of reading and encourage life-long learning and foster a love of learning and reading for children of all ages.  Possess creativity, a drive for excellence and a commitment to continue ongoing professional development to expand knowledge and programming.  Strong leadership abilities, excellent problem-solving, time management and demonstrated public speaking skills.  Demonstrate computer and internet literacy; must be able to work evenings and weekend with reliable transportation to travel to work and any offsite required locations.  Incumbent must continuously demonstrate a strong public service orientation. 

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two years of experience in children’s library or related professional services working with children. A combination of education and relevant experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position will be considered.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Demonstrated expertise in the principals and practices of effective; library management; familiar with current trends, information technology, and database searches.  Knowledge of development, recreational and educational needs of children.  Knowledge on how to conduct engaging story hour appropriate to preschool children, using stories, songs, fingerplays, action rhyme.  Expertise in children’s literature and understanding the psychology of children.  Knowledge of best practices in children and teen service, including guild lines and standards published by ALA, ALSC, YALSA and other recognized organizations.  Knowledge of best practices in community assessment/engagement and effective practices in evaluation and outcomes measurement. Knowledge of the principles and correct usage of English language including grammar, punctuation, and spelling.  

Skills:  Skilled in dealing constant contact and collaboration with children with diverse backgrounds and abilities.  High level of organizational skills.  Creative Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must deal tactfully and courteously with parents and library patrons of all ages. Enthusiastic, energetic and accurate in completion of assigned tasks.  Skilled at working with software applications and online databases.  Skilled at identifying and prioritizing multiple projects; possess a propensity for details.  Takes initiative and interest in improving existing work techniques and procedures; maintain a high level of professionalism and commitment to the Town.  Skilled at managing and operating library systems, and databases (OCLN).  Skilled at leading and speaking distinctly to large groups.  

Abilities: Ability to analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives and develop creative solutions.  Demonstrate proficiency in current and emerging technologies.  Ability to learn and use library technologies.  Ability to maintain patron confidentiality.  Ability to plan short-term and long—term work objectives with staff, to assign tasks and to follow-up to ensure quality of work and completion of tasks.  

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively; mentor, train, inspire and motivate staff to achieve program goals.  Identify, organize, plan and conduct children’s programs for the entire fiscal year, from conception to successful execution.  Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and in person.  Ability to learn and stay current with emerging technology, including digital media. Ability to maintain confidentiality of library records.   Ability to use initiative and independent judgment in a variety of situations
