Library Assistant, Joshua Hyde Public Library (Sturbridge)

Part Time Library Asst.; Approx. 13 hours per week including 2 evenings per week, 2 Saturdays/month, and the ability to substitute

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, other duties may be assigned:

·        Provides general library services to the public at the circulation desk.  Charges and discharges books and other library material.  Registers new patrons.  Notifies patrons of books on reserve and overdue books and materials.  Utilizes computer resources in both circulation activities and in reference and readers' advisory services.  

·        Advises patrons of reference and computer materials to facilitate their informational needs.

·        Provides direction to new users of the layout of the library and services provided.

·        Initiates interlibrary loans and material using prescribed guidelines through the regional library network and system.

·        Keep patron information including the names of library users, addresses, telephone numbers and the material borrowed confidential as required by MGL Ch. 4, Sec. 26 and Ch. 78, Sec. 7.

·        Knowledge and frequent use of computers, fax machine, copy machine and scanner. Assists patrons with the operation of library computer systems and other library equipment.

·        Initiates interlibrary loans and material using prescribed guidelines through C/W Mars and the Massachusetts Regional Library System.

·        Attend library workshops as appropriate.

Children's Department

In addition to the above duties, Children’s Dept staff will also:

·        Assist juvenile patrons and their parents in book selection, reference and research

·        Services and assists in the preparation and presentation of the Summer Reading Program

·        Assists with special library programs, summer reading clubs and similar activities

·        Assists with displays and publicity

·        Attends children's workshops as appropriate

Education and/or Experience                  

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills                    

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills                          

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability                             

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills        

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of computer usage and internet skills
