Library Assistant, Merrick Public Library (Brookfield)

The Merrick Public Library is seeking applicants for the position of part-time/substitute Library Assistant. 

Work Schedule:

Tuesdays 5:00PM - 8:00PM

Saturdays 10:00AM - 1:00PM

Schedule flexibility preferred for covering staff vacations and/or sick days. 

Essential Functions

• Staffs the circulation desk and uses an automated circulation system to check library materials in and out, renew, place holds, and process holds for delivery. 
• Assists patrons with using public computers, mobile devices, printers, copier/scanner, and fax machine, as well as troubleshooting basic issues with this technology. 
• Performs basic circulation desk transactions, including creating new library cards, assisting with reader’s advisory, and answering basic reference questions.
• Collects, processes, and sorts returned materials from the book drop.
• Shelves and shifts materials as required.
• Instructs library users on library card use and related policies.
• May assist with programs, events, and projects as needed.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. At least one year experience working in a library, customer service, or clerical setting preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Technology experience is essential.

• Excellent customer service skills; ability to communicate effectively, deal tactfully, and maintain a professional demeanor with staff and patrons.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately and thoroughly.
• Detail-oriented, organized, and able to prioritize, pivot between tasks, and work with distractions.
• Proficiency with computers and working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and basic search techniques.
• Ability to learn Evergreen and keep up with frequent and consistent software updates.
• Proficiency using office equipment including copier, printer, and fax machine.
• Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. 
• Ability to bend, reach, and perform other repeated movements throughout the work day.
• Preferred: working knowledge of basic public library concepts and resources; experience with advanced search techniques, Libby, and Overdrive.
