Paraprofessional Assistant - Part Time, Malden Public Library (Malden)
This position focus on the provision of support services to all departments and the provision of public service in the Circulation Department and Children’s Department. Performs any assigned duty necessary to maintain efficient library service to the public.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Senior Librarian and Department Librarians; Circulation Responsibilities: explains policies, registers new patrons/updates patron info for replacement, collects fines and fees/updates patron record, registers patrons for computer use, answers and routes phone calls, checks materials in & out and renews books, reserves museum passes, and shelves materials. Departmental Responsibilities: Adult: mending, serials checking,
barcoding, and linking, rental book check in/maintenance, collection agency account maintenance, on & offsite program assistance, I.L.L. delivery/requests processing, and shelf reading; Technical Services: Withdrawing books, AV maintenance, accessioning materials, and processing materials. Children’s Services: Crafting, supervising messengers in the children’s dept., storytelling, and reference in the children’s dept., Community Outreach Responsibilities: Assists
Librarians with offsite programs. Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a public setting, subject to quiet to moderate noise with frequent interruptions. While the work is varied, many of the tasks are of a repetitive nature. Up to two thirds of the time is spent standing, walking, stooping, or reaching with hands and arms. Frequently the incumbent will lift up to 10 pounds, occasional lifting is required up to 30 pounds, with or without accommodation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrates good interpersonal skills during interaction with patrons, staff, and community; demonstrates good active listening skills. Must have computer skills. The position requires a commitment to service excellence; the ability to see the big picture of the library; the ability to work well with others in a team and independently; prioritize and focus on what is critical; commitment to lifelong learning; ability to translate patron needs and interests into effective library services.
18.5 hours per week with no benefits, work hours will include evenings and Saturdays
Qualifications
Personable, energetic and outgoing individual. Ability to interact well with the public: good judgment, courtesy and tact essential. Ability to carry out assigned duties independently, creatively and in an organized manner required. Computer proficiency for data entry, searching and library tasks needed. Ability to handle details with accuracy; ability to multitask under pressure. Previous Library experience a plus. Bilingual skills preferred but not required. Associate
degree minimum.
