Reference Librarian, Westfield Athenaeum (Westfield)

Reporting to the Head of Adult Services, the Reference Librarian serves as a member of the Reference Team, performs a wide range of reference duties, including: assisting patrons at the reference services desk and answering reference questions by phone, chat, and email.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

1. Performs the full range of reference and information services in person, by phone, chat, and email in order to assist our patrons.
2. Determines the nature of information requests, the level of patron understanding and needs by conducting a standard reference interview, as appropriate.
3. Provide reference materials, both print and electronic, to patrons as needed.
4. Provide readers' advisory and referral services.
5. Collaborate with the Reference staff in all aspects of collection development for maintaining well-balanced reference and non-fiction print and non-print collections. 
6. Perform evaluation, selection, purchasing and weeding of collections as assigned.
7. Instruct patrons in the use of all emerging technologies and the use of electronic books and audio/visual material.
8. Attend continuing education workshops, roundtables and informational and professional development meetings as needed or assigned.
9. Provide strong customer support at all public service desks as needed.
10. Provide instruction in information literacy and related programs.
11. Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Adult Services or the Director.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

1. A Bachelor's Degree.
2. Excellent customer service skills.
3. Intermediate computer skills using Microsoft Office.
4. The ability to work as part of a team and independently.
5. Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
6. The ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
7. The ability to work some nights and weekends.
8. The ability to bend and lift light loads up to 25 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications: 

1. A Masters of Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program.
2. One to three years of library experience.
3. Experience with interlibrary loan procedures.
