Library Director, Weeks Public Library (Greenland, NH)

The Weeks Public Library is located in the town of Greenland, New Hampshire, a seacoast community in Rockingham County bordering Portsmouth and the Great Bay. The town’s population as of the 2021 census is 4124 residents. There is a K-8 school - the Greenland Community School as well as two licensed childcare facilities. Children attend Portsmouth High School for grades 9-12. Greenland’s location makes it an ideal place to settle given the seashore and nearby mountains as well as numerous walking and hiking facilities. It is truly an amazing place to live.
The newly renovated Weeks Library is the jewel of Greenland and is located steps away from the Greenland Community School. The library has a children’s room, teen room, an adult service section, a conference room, meeting rooms, as well as the beloved Living Room.
The library is currently staffed with a Children’s Librarian, a Teen Services and Programming Librarian as well as four, long-tenured additional staff members. The staff’s duties assure that the library runs efficiently and serves the community’s needs. The collegially atmosphere that has been a part of the library culture will make this an easy transition for the new library director.
The Library Director will be responsible for the smooth daily functioning of the library. In consultation with an active five-member Board of Trustees, as well as two alternate trustees, the director will establish the broad goals of the library and the framework within which its day-to-day activities will take place. These activities include maintaining a balanced materials collection of literary, informational and recreational value, providing maximum awareness of and access to the collection, and promoting the collection, programs and other services.
The duties listed below are intended as illustrations of the various types of work to be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is related, or a logical assignment to the position.
Administrative
· Has strong leadership, administrative and organizational skills
· Posts and advertises job openings, conducts interviews, and makes recommendations to the trustees for hiring of new employees and dismissing if necessary
· Plans and manages work schedules
· Supervises staff, assigning duties and making reassignments as necessary to ensure efficient use of personnel
· Oversees training of staff
· Provides opportunities for professional development and advancement
· Recognizes staff accomplishments and professional growth
· Promotes an atmosphere conducive to communication between staff and director and provides opportunities for staff participation in the decision-making process
· Provides for additional staff when necessary to cover vacations, absences due to illness and for unpredictable gaps that occur to insure adequate coverage
· Prepares a monthly report on the status of the library, including budget, statistics, programming, staffing, and other significant items
· Prepares an annual report to the town and to the state
· Manages the library finances and prepares financial documents for annual audit and retains required records
· Maintains a database of patrons, library materials, and circulation statistics.
· Is proficient with IT systems and manages equipment, outsourcing where necessary
· Selects and catalogs materials for circulation
· Responsible for website design and maintenance
· Responsible for all aspects of payroll, including timesheets, federal reports, state reports, year-end W-2s, monthly NHRS payments and responsible for generating the worker’s compensation report
2. PROGRAMMING AND PATRON SERVICE
In collaboration with staff, plans and coordinates programs of diverse interest for patrons of all ages within the community at large
Supports programs and library services with appropriate purchase and management of supplies and equipment
Manages Meeting Room Schedule
Prepares a monthly list of new releases for the newsletters
Provides reference, interlibrary loan, and reader’s advisory service to patrons
Maintains and implements procedures to assure that materials are publicized and circulated efficiently
Utilizes statewide library services including the interlibrary loan system
Manages preparation of posters, flyers, and the exterior sign to keep the public informed of upcoming events
Provides technical assistance as necessary to patrons utilizing library equipment and services
3. PUBLIC RELATIONS
Maintains a warm, respectful, professional milieu within the library
Communicates effectively and collaboratively with patrons and staff
Maintains positive, ongoing, effective communications with the school and town officials and departments as well as with the Friends of the Library
Effectively informs the community at large of library activities by publishing and distributing information that promotes the library via social media platforms
Creates and distributes event publicity and maintains the online calendar
4. EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Stays current through professional journals, literature and Internet access with all aspects of library work
Holds membership in professional library organizations
Attends professional meetings and workshops
Encourages and supports staff participation in continuing education and academic
opportunities
5. FACILITY
Oversees completion of regular maintenance and cleaning procedures
Attends to all necessary repair and service needs for the building, grounds, and furnishings
Preferred Qualifications
· A Masters degree in Library Science/Information from an institution accredited by the ALA
· A minimum of 3 years leading and managing a team. Previous experience as a Director, Acting Director or Assistant Director in a public library is highly desirable
· Exceptional communication skills and the ability to promote the vision and needs of the library
· Skilled at building budgets, tracking funds, and identifying funding needs
· Experience with Excel and other financial software is desired
· Proven ability to motivate, inspire and support a team
· Experience in developing and implementing library policies and strategic plans
· Dedication to professional development
· Knowledge of ALA policies, NH Library RSAs, and Department of Labor Laws
· Ability to be creative regarding the role and activities of a community library
· Familiarity with current library software and technologies, as well as social media platforms
· Openness and vision for the role of technology
· Knowledge of current and emerging library trends, as well as best practices for libraries
· Enthusiasm and experience for the promoting the library to the greater community
· Demonstrate the highest levels of integrity in all conduct and work
This is a full-time, salaried position with compensation commensurate with experience, plus excellent benefits, including the New Hampshire Retirement System. The salary range is $65,000.00-$70,000.00.
We anticipate that the new director will begin work on or before May 1, 2023.
