Job Summary


**Please note this is a 6-month term position**

Information and Technical Services actively supports the teaching and research mission of the Harvard Library by managing monograph, serial and e-resource acquisitions, metadata creation, and metadata management for the Harvard Library.

Under the supervision of the Manager for the Professional Schools unit in Metadata Creation, the incumbent provides timely access to Harvard Library by performing a variety of cataloging tasks for Latin American material in Spanish and Portuguese languages. They will contribute productively and cooperatively in a team environment.

Priorities will be set to maximize contributions to the overall goals of the Information and Technical Services Department of the Harvard Library. Due to the varied nature and volume of the work in ITS, all ITS staff may be called upon to contribute to work in any unit or team of the ITS department, as organizational needs warrant.


Position Description

 • Performs the full range of cataloging tasks, including original and complex copy cataloging and assignment of subject headings and classification for Latin American titles at the Harvard Law School Library.
 • Works on resolution of bibliographic and holdings problems, as well as those requiring in-depth knowledge of procedures or substantial correction of records.
 • May create and update name authority records in consultation with a professional cataloger as required.

 • Performs additional system tasks, such as running queries and batch processes.



Basic Qualifications

 • Proficient knowledge of English and working knowledge of Spanish and Portuguese.
 • 1+ years of cataloging experience.
 • 2+ years of experience in an academic library.
 • College degree or equivalent experience.
 • Demonstrated facility with automated systems, including using online databases, working with spreadsheets and knowledge of file management techniques.



Additional Qualifications and Skills


 • Knowledge of cataloging tools and standards including RDA, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Library of Congress Classification desirable.

 • Prior experience cataloging legal material highly desirable.

 • Ability to work independently to perform complex tasks.

Physical Requirements

 • Keyboarding for at least 6 hours a day may be required.
 • Ability to handle books and other library material, including moving and shifting these materials between workstations, shelves, book trucks and boxes.


Working Conditions

 • The position will be based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. There may be the opportunity for a flexible or hybrid work model compliant with Harvard University remote work policies.
