Substitutes, Amesbury Public Library (Amesbury)
The City of Amesbury (estimated population 18,000), a dynamic Merrimack Valley community rich in tradition with a vibrant and expanding economic base, is seeking strong candidates to serve as Amesbury Public Library Substitutes. The substitutes will provide fill-in coverage support for Amesbury Public Library on an as needed basis in the areas of reference, youth services and circulation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as examples of the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
Librarian Substitutes:
• Provides assistance at the reference desk to library patrons of all ages in location and use of library materials, resources, and facilities.
• Performs interlibrary library loan functions (Commonwealth Catalog, CLIO, OCLC, etc.)
• Assists patrons with public computer use including troubleshooting, printing, and scanning.
• Assists patrons with eReaders and eBook services like Overdrive/Libby.
• Provides information, basic reference, and readers’ advisory to library users in direct consultation, by phone, email, and other emerging technologies.
• Answers routine reference questions, using print, electronic, and community resources.
• Maintains statistics on usage of reference services.
• Maintains high level of awareness of new databases and new web resources.
• Performs searches for materials in the library catalog.
• Places holds for patrons.
• Explains library policies and handles confidential information.
• Other duties as assigned.
Library Assistant Substitutes:
• Performs work at the circulation desk or youth service desk including answering patron account questions, library logistics and directional questions, and directing more complex inquiries to appropriate staff members.
• Operates technology at and around the circulation/YS desk including computers, printers, and copiers; instructs patrons in using the public copier if needed.
• Checks out and renews materials.
• Reserves and checks out museum passes.
• Performs searches for materials in the library catalog.
• Files patron holds.
• Checks in returns and holds.
• Explains library policies and handles confidential information.
• Forwards calls to appropriate departments as needed.
• Assists patrons in locating materials as needed.
• Helps library pages with their responsibilities.
• Processes new items before they get catalogued including checking items in the package against invoices, adding appropriate stickers, adding barcode, and all other pre-catalogue level work.
• Performs minor book repairs including re-wrapping books with torn plastic protector jackets.
• Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualities:
• Strong public service commitment.
• Excellent computer skills.
• Knowledge of current public library circulation practices.
• Expertise in the use of Windows operating system and knowledge of Web-based technologies.
• Familiarity with integrated library systems, preferably Symphony.
• Ability to develop effective working relationships with department personnel and with the general public.
• High degree of flexibility and the ability to multi-task and frequently change focus.
• Effective time management skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and be flexible.
• Ability to work as a team member and independently.
• Ability to work in a busy customer service environment.
• Good interpersonal skills, friendly manner, and strong service orientation.
• Good organizational skills, attention to detail, procedures and follow up capabilities.
• Ability to understand the Dewey Decimal System.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Employees must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. This position requires the employee to communicate, detect, converse with, discern, express oneself, exchange information. The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. This position requires the employee to detect, determine, perceive, identify, recognize, judge, observe, inspect, estimate, and assess. The ability to observe details at close range within a few feet of the observer. This employee frequently moves boxes up to 20 pounds across office areas for various needs, including having to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

Qualifications
Librarian
A master’s degree in library science in a program accredited by the American Library Association and a minimum of 2-3 years professional experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Library Assistant
High School Diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred. Previous library experience using automated integrated library network, personal computers, electronic databases, and the internet preferred. This position calls for a high degree of initiative and independence.
