Substitute Library Assistant, Tilton Library (Deerfield)

Friendly collaborative team is looking for a substitute library assistant to occasionally cover for staff at circulation desks in adult and youth areas.

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

·         Assists patrons at the circulation desk and throughout the library.  Checks materials in and out, issues library cards.  Answers the telephone.  Provides information about library services and the use of the online catalog.  Collects and records fines and fees.

·         Maintains and updates confidential records.  Adheres to the library’s Policy Concerning Confidentiality of Library Patron Records in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws.

·         Assists patrons with operation of the library computer system.

·         Shelves library materials.  Maintains reading areas and displays in a neat, organized manner.  Reads shelves to maintain materials in proper order and accessibility.  Weeds materials as requested.

·         Assists in keeping the adult and/or children’s rooms neat and orderly, including care of books, magazines, and multimedia.

·         Closes and secures the Children’s Room and Adult Room at the end of the work day.

·         Processes library materials following established procedures.

·         Calls patrons about library materials placed on hold for them.

·         Monitors the condition of library materials for needed repairs or replacement.

·         Performs reference services, providing referrals and reader’s advisory services as needed.

·         Maintains order and discipline in the library in consultation with other library staff.

·         Maintains contact with patrons either in person or via phone, or in writing.

·         Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience::

High school graduation plus at least two year of customer service experience, preferably in library setting.  Sufficient experience with technology to be comfortable using and explaining a variety of electronics and basic computer applications.

Knowledge and Abilities:

●        Skill in the use of computers, e-readers and tablets, standard office machines, internet, and basic computer applications.

●        Knowledge of Evergreen online circulation program strongly preferred

●        Knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft Office

●        Considerable ability to accurately perform data entry work on a computer workstation.

●        Positive attitude toward public service work.

●        Highly motivated and able to work independently.

●        Possess good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationship with the public, peers, and supervisors.

●        Considerable knowledge of customer service principles and techniques.

●        Ability to file alphabetically and numerically. 

●        Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

●        Ability to handle simple monetary transactions. 

●        Ability to complete routine tasks as assigned.

●        Ability to understand and make decisions in accordance with library policies and procedures. 

●        Possess a working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.

●        Ability to perform moderate physical work.



Physical Demands of the Position:



●        Bending/twisting, reaching and feeling. 

●        Climbing: ascending and descending short footstool. 

●        Handling: picking up and shelving books. 

●        Lifting and carrying: 50 pounds or less. 

●        Pushing and pulling: objects weighing 300-400 pounds on wheels. 

●        Sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling and crouching. 

●        Reading down to the ground and up to 80 inches in height with the aid of a footstool. 

●        Near vision: reading faded type, font size 12 or smaller on item labels.
