Library Assistant, Saint John's High School (Shrewsbury)

Role of the Library Assistant
Saint John’s High School is seeking a dynamic and engaging Library Assistant to join our school community. Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Library Assistant helps with various library tasks and aids in the supervision of the McCarthy Library at Saint John’s High School. We value diversity in backgrounds and in experiences and look for candidates who are knowledgeable in their field, caring and compassionate, and ready to work with all of our students, teachers, and staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
-Greet students and help to foster a warm and welcoming library environment
-Assist in the supervision of the library space throughout the school day
-Check materials in/out
-Assist in the maintenance of library collections and catalog records
-Assist students, staff, and faculty in the use of library resources (library catalog, databases, website, ebooks) to effectively meet their needs and interests
-Shelve materials, shelf read, and shift materials as needed
-Answer basic questions and refer students to the library director for assistance as appropriate
-Provide efficient and courteous service to students and faculty at the Reference Desk by answering inquiries, providing direction, assuring compliance with Library regulations
-Maintain and troubleshoot library equipment
-Operate and assist students and faculty with equipment such as photocopiers, printers, and scanners
-Maintain magazine collection
-Assist with book displays
-Maintain neatness and organization throughout the library
-Assist in collection development including processing and weeding of books
-Perform inventory tasks such as scanning materials and searching for unseen or lost materials
-Be respectful and understanding of our patrons’ rights to privacy
-An understanding of and commitment to Catholic education
-Ability to articulate effectively the values and mission of Saint John’s High School and the Xaverian Brothers
-Enthusiasm for working with middle and high school students
-Knowledge of contemporary educational issues, topics, and trends, especially those impacting boys and young men.
-A proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
-Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Experience and Skills
-Bachelor’s degree
-1-3 years of experience in an educational environment
-Prior experience working in a library setting
-Attention to detail and ability to work accurately on tasks
-Ability to use technology to gather information
-Skilled in navigating the Google Suite of applications (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, etc.).
-Ability to troubleshoot computer and printer issues
-Professional demeanor and presentation
-Demonstrated initiative and independence to carry out responsibilities
-Willingness to learn the use of library databases and other systems
-Strong written and oral communications skills
-Ability to reach and support diverse learners with varied abilities
-Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes in library programs and services
-Excellent time management skills and ability to handle frequent interruptions
