Outreach and Marketing Librarian, Shrewsbury Public Library (Shrewsbury)
Under general supervision of the Assistant Library Director, the Library Professional Associate – Outreach & Marketing, is responsible for serving as a key library ambassador to the community, planning and implementing engaging programs to be offered at various locations, identifying populations that need outreach service, and marketing library programs, services, and collections to the public. Follows department rules, regulations and policies, requiring the ability to perform detailed operations, manage and prioritize tasks, communicate effectively with all staff and complete tasks according to a prescribed time schedule. Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of departmental operations, fiscal planning and management and the exercise of judgment and initiative.
Evaluates community needs, identifies services that will benefit long-time residents and newer populations, develops goals, plans, and procedures for implementing outreach services in accordance with the library’s service priorities.
Provides inclusive and equitable services to patrons from various language groups and cultural backgrounds.
Plans, publicizes, and implements diverse programming for all ages at apartment complexes, for seniors at elder care residences, and at schools, parks or other outdoor locations.
Communicates with homebound patrons and educators to determine desired library materials, selects materials from the library’s collections or arranges for inter-library loan of needed materials, requiring advance planning to meet programming needs of users.
Stocks and loads the outreach van with necessary materials; drives outreach van and delivers materials directly to schools, preschools and homebound patrons directly or to centralized drop spots.
Maintains cleanliness and proper operating condition of outreach van and conducts off-site library card registration; and provides library materials to designated facilities and locations.
Attends local community events such as Spirit of Shrewsbury, Farmers’ Market, fairs at the Senior Center etc. and promotes library services.
Conducts presentations as a library representative to community groups, at public meetings, and at other library outreach events.
Designs, publishes, and distributes a wide range of print and electronic communications and publications such as press releases, signage, brochures, flyers, and posters.
Provides staff supervision in the evenings and on weekends, and may be required to work at the circulation, children’s or reference desk.
Recommends to other department heads service ideas for various segments in the community.
Reviews Library policy and procedures with the library user to ensure high quality and equitable customer service; interprets and responds to library user requests for information and assistance, provides information and makes appropriate referrals.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, graphic design, public relations or related field; four years of progressively responsible experience; experience in a public library setting preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Knowledge of library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems, online catalogs and information technology. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System, Microsoft Office Applications and other library classification systems. Bilingual candidates with proficiency in a foreign language such as Spanish, Portuguese, or Mandarin are welcomed.
Proficiency with computers, document creation software, presentation software, spreadsheets, and social media platforms. Familiarity with website design and management preferred. Graphic design experience and the ability to create promotional material. Ability to write grammatically correct press releases, professional correspondence, and program descriptions. Ability to learn computer operations and library research and data retrieval methods. Ability to operate library equipment and technologies.
Knowledge and understanding of the Library's mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities. Ability to work independently, prioritize, adapt quickly to changing environments, and meet established deadlines. Ability to demonstrate initiative, flexibility, and dependability in an environment with frequent interruptions and competing priorities.
Skill in organizing and maintaining records; excellent organizational and planning skills. Excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills required. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in public service and enthusiasm for working with and fostering strong relationships with people of all demographics.
